Harvey told Susan he had to go and could only stay for the ceremony and not the reception if you looked at Susan she was crushed, tears in her eyes the moment he said he was going to leave, so in anger and disappointment she wanted Brain to give her away due to the fact that he was a big part of her life. We the viewer only see a glimpse of the family's realtionship we don't know how many times Harvey hurt Susan and how many times Gene knocked Harvey while around Susan, but all of that dissipates when Harvey shows up for the Reception and gives that wonderful speech.

Susan was hurt not a b!tch.

"Whoo! Whoo! Hey, Parny. I'm going to Chicago, baby! I'm driving a stick!"

Yes and no...keep in mind, she did stick him all the way at the other end of the table and he was booked in a hotel while the rest of the family was put up at a house. Granted, the latter was the ex-wife's doing but Susan could've stepped up to the plate and asked her mother to be more accommodating.

I agree with you. I didn't see a crushed look in her eye when he told her he had to leave for a meeting. I saw a spiteful witch...

He was treated like an unwanted visitor and outsider from the moment he hit London, beginning with the wedding party being put up in a house while he was stuck in a hotel all alone.

Then, for her to stick him at the end of the table opposite the families, that was a huge slight on her part. And did you overhear the future son-in-law say to the step-dad, "Maybe I should start calling you Dad?" She looked at him so wistfully at the rehearsal dinner, I had hope that she regretted so much between the two of them... I almost got the sense she did a lot of things because her mother and wealthy step-father expected it of her.

In just the beginning, I get the impression he has a bit of a drinking problem, based on things Mom said at the rehearsal dinner. But I also got the impression she left him for the step-dad when he walked up to them and said, "I haven't seen you two since you..."

What it looks like to me is that "Mom" was resentful towards "Dad" and took it out on the daughter by keeping her from him. Yes, he's preoccupied by his job but maybe the preoccupation came from his daughter being yanked out of his life versus his truly being preoccupied. It's not uncommon for women to use the "uterine" excuse for keeping kids away from their fathers in a bitter divorce. They manage to conveniently forget the family would probably still be together were it not for them cheating...

But that's just my opinion.

I have to agree. I got the feeling when Harvey talked about his former marriage that his ex and his daughter both got the idea that they could do better and they both left him and ignored him afterward. And it was obvious they both looked down on his career.

A heart can be broken, but it still keeps a-beatin' just the same.

Yes, if Harvey was somehow responsible for how poorly the mother and, in particular, the daughter treated him, then they really needed to confirm that he'd been a horrible guy to live with; leaving it up for us to decide seems pointless. For instance, they should've made it clear if the daughter only decided to have the step dad walk her down the aisle after Harvey said he could only stay for the reception. Because if that was her plan even before he said he couldn't stay, then she ends up looking downright cruel. Some things really needed to be expanded on so we can better decide what to make of these people and their actions.

She wasn't a bit of a biatch, she was a complete biatch! The ex wife too.

I'm watching the movie for the first time, right now. So far, Harvey has been left in the hotel and he's been moved to the end of the table. I agree that the daughter and the ex-wife are treating him like an unwanted guest; an outsider. I'm not thinking too much of them - especially the daughter.
