A likely anachronism

Ernest is watching "Match of the Day", but the signature tune used is "Offside" which was not the signature tune used in 1964. This part of the film was definitely before the "Swizzlewick" incident, and that finished in November 1964. Also, "Match of the Day" was a BBC2 programme and BBC2 would not have been available in their area until 6 December 1964, unless of course they were lucky enough to have cable TV which may possibly have carried BBC2 from April.

Ah! A fellow traveller on the road to Pedantry!

What I noticed about that same scene was that the theme to MOTD opens with John Motson shouting "Oh what a goal...goal...goal...goal..." (then the music). This bit of commentary was from a Fulham game the previous season (1973-74) when Alan Mullery scored a fantastic volley from outside the box - it won goal of the season and was used as MOTD's opening credits for the entire 74-75 season, a full ten years after the incidents depicted!
