Another promising young Latino film maker has arrived

Some of the very best films I have seen in the past 5 years have come from the Latino film making community. By now the names are ones we all know...Del Toro, Cuaron, Meirelles, Arriaga etc. Now we have another one to add to this list or at least keep a close eye on, Ernesto Díaz Espinoza. Mirageman represents Espinoza's second effort as writer, director and editor and it succeeds on every level. Mirageman is impressive in its raw, honest look and feel and it is quite an achievement as a Chilean based low-budget film. It is an entertaining and refreshing mix of camp and seriousness that worked well for me. I dare say that this film is just as good as any in its genre currently being produced by Hollywood. If you think you may be interested in seeing this film then I would encourage you to do so. If you are a fan of the superhero genre or more specifically the anyman superhero sub-genre you should not be disappointed. The film does have some minor missteps but that hardly ruins the experience. And if you are looking for extravagant special effects and over the top fight choreography this film is not your cup of tea. Although there are a couple of Mirageman kicks that looked unassisted by wires and were impressive as hell.

There is NO Gene for the Human Spirit.

Agreed.

What he managed to do with this film, on a marginal budget, is amazing. - And he has a great knack for mixing action with true heart & human interaction.

My only fear, based on the film he did next, is that he will be pigeon-holed (or actually choose) to become just an action-flick director. I thought the martial arts segments of this film were fine, but you could have removed 90% of them & the movie would still have been great.

Oh, c'mon!
It's OK if you like his movie, but you can't be serious comparing thid DUOC guy and his LatinXplotation movies with real talented directors like Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuarón. He's more like the next Nicolás Lopez.

Tell me when he writes and directs something in the likes of El Laberinto del Fauno or Children of Men, rather than "Santiago Violenta", for God sake.

Please excuse my terrible redaction, english is not my native language IMDb = Catch-22
