Alright fellow posters, lock and load your homophobe comments

Cuz I did not care for this film at all. Jim Carrey as a gay con man? Awesome I says to myself. This should be high larious! And it is marketed as a comedy. Well, I might have laughed once. Maybe if I had been told it was just a romance flick (unlike other posters who call it a rom com I am calling it just a romance flick cuz, as I said, where was the comedy?) I wouldn't have been as disappointed. But as I told my pal, despite fine performances from the two leads this was just a boring romance flick. I mean come on! This guy escapes from jail so often they call him Houdini! Show that! Show his schemes and all! Instead we just get a gay couple falling in love and the trials they go through. Bo-oring! Give me Dumb and Dumber or Trainspotting any day thank you very much!I

The concept may sound over-the-top, but it's mostly true. The biggest truth is that being gay is at the forefront of the character. If you have problems with it then maybe you're a homophobe.

Do these feelings arise because of fear of your own latency?

reply

Oh for *beep* sake..... dumb people like you are the reason why no one takes the gay rights talk seriously anymore. People like you are the reason why annoying facebook memes are made everyday about gay people.

reply

Homophobia only applies as a hate crime. It is a form of bigotry, another mostly misapplied/overused term. I seriously doubt that a movie review would rise to that level. The term homophobia is mostly misused. Merely commenting on the appropriateness of someone's lifestyle as it relates to a movie is not a hate crime. Going out on Friday night to bash in the heads of homosexuals with a baseball bat is a hate crime. Know the distinction. The fact that you have to apologize in advance shows how over-sensitized we have become about it. Where has freedom of speech gone that a simple movie review invokes such a response!? I have been discriminated against throughout my life for being very overweight. But I would not call that bigotry. My 'difference' (being overweight) is obvious at a single glance. Homosexuality is not an easily identifiable characteristic and thus I would be more quickly discriminated against than a gay person. It never stopped me from gainful employment but did interfere with my social life.

reply

Actually, that's incorrect. Homophobia is an irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals, like arachnophobia is an abnormal fear of spiders. Homophobia is observable in critical and hostile behavior such as discrimination and violence on the basis of a perceived non-heterosexual orientation. Interestingly, in both cases the fear is more abnormal and irrational (and dangerous) than the thing which triggers it. Spiders and gays, just going about their business, and yet people react as if there's something to be afraid of. So a movie reviewer who expressed dislike for a movie only because of its gay content could (I would say) sink to the level of homophobia.

As for your comments on being overweight, I don't find they apply very well here. I don't deny that you were discriminated against. I think that it's exactly homosexuality's invisibility which makes it more menacing to homophobes. According to one monitoring group, one in four gay men has been physically assaulted as a result of his perceived sexual orientation; about fifty percent have been threatened with violence. Many people have been murdered only for the reason that they are gay, and not just historically, but within the last year. Had a review read something like, "... I thought it was going to be a funny movie about a fat con man, but then I realized it was just a movie about a fat couple falling in love - bo-oring!" I would have no qualms calling it bigoted.

And finally, as for the initial post itself, it's not particularly homophobic, mostly just narrow-minded. I was pleasantly surprised, and not disappointed that it wasn't another Carrey slapstick vehicle, but had a quirky depth of emotion to it. But he's right, the marketing is misleading, if that matters to you.

reply

I just don't understand why are gay-themed movie keeps increasing every year, it is not that I am a homophobia, I think such movie has a hidden message or mission, like to tell you that being guy or lesbian is fine as long as you're okay with it, what do you say?

reply

I don't knthink its correct that gay themed Films are increasing every year. There has been a steady release of Gay themed films for some time. As an avid follower of these types of films I've found this to be a constant from the early to mid nineties. most are indie flicks so you wouldn't hear a lot about them but as for mainstream releases there really isn't many that come out each year. Quite a minimal amount compared with the number of Non gay themed films. possible proprtionate to the Gay: Straight population

sorry, a bit out of topic, I think on sexuality people should go by nature because it is what we are made for. no offense.

reply

I think on sexuality people should go by nature because it is what we are made for.

Not anymore it isn't. Couples are becoming increasingly more childless with each year. Sex is no longer purely for procreation as we no longer have the instinct to mate. We do it for fun. It's good for you, it's healthy and great exercise. We weren't "made" for anything; male/female sex evolved because it allowed for greater genetic diversity. Homosexuality has known evolutionary benefits in varied species of non-human animals.

Looks like BonIver is carrying the torch for the gay community.

If you say so.

Whatever dude...you can say whatever you want to convince yourself that "times are a changin"....I guess God is evolving too?!

(a) Times are a changin'; homosexuality is becoming increasingly less taboo.
(b) God doesn't exist.

BonIver, you should go into politics - I think you actually convince yourself, on topics, as you begin to write.

What are you babbling about?

You actually compared homosexuality to non-human animals? Really?

Humans are animals so the comparison is apt, yes. People tend to believe that homosexuality is a choice, but I question why it occurs in the animal kingdom and why it has evolutionary benefits? If homosexuality is a detriment, why do some species find a benefit in it?

I guess a rapist can convince themselves that raping is OK, since non-human species force themselves on other non-human species when they want a piece of ass?

No, because rape is immoral and is a detriment to the survival of a species. What animals are raping one another?

Dude, you are simply a liberal POS.

You say that like it's a bad thing. I want all humans to be treated equally and I'm the bad guy?

Humanity is not that hard to figure out, unless you over think it.

What?

Just because people aren't procreating as much, doesn't mean the the entire DNA of humanity has changed

It means that our innate desire to procreate is gone, essentially. We, for the majority of us, use sex as a means of recreation and exercise. Saying, the species would die out if we were all gay or sex is for procreation is pointless; these things are no longer applicable.

what was wrong then, is wrong now

Missed ancient Greece did you?

but that doesn't change the fact that they are marketing this the wrong way.

No they aren't. Did you see a trailer? What a shame - you had to sit through a well-made, well-acted (by your own admission) movie starring two terrific actors with a new, intriguing plot that was about homosexuals! How disgusted were you?!

Hey, Boniver. It's been a long time since you made that comment and I agree with the essence of what you're talking about, but I can't stop from nitpicking a bit. Sorry.

I guess a rapist can convince themselves that raping is OK, since non-human species force themselves on other non-human species when they want a piece of ass

No, because rape is immoral and is a detriment to the survival of a species. What animals are raping one another?

Rape is immoral, but it's neither unnatural nor a detriment to the survival of the species. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_coercion)

Homosexuality, unlike rape, is OK because no one gets hurt. Of course I'm the kind of person who thinks it's OK for consenting adults to hurt themselves if they want to (i.e. use drugs), but that's another topic. The point is not to succumb to the naturalistic fallacy: neither everything natural is good and nor everything unnatural is bad.

It means that our innate desire to procreate is gone, essentially.

Our sexual drive is our "innate desire to procreate". Steven Pinker said it best here:
http://books.google.gr/books?id=ePNi4ZqYdVQC&lpg=PT92&ots=kJB5 BmIrR4&dq=proximate%20cause%20sex&pg=PT92#v=onepage&q=prox imate%20cause&f=false.

So, humans haven't lost our innate desire to procreate! We've merely used our superior intellect to separate the ultimate cause (kids) form the proximate one (sex), then created contraceptives to deal with it. Aren't we awesome? :D

And this concludes my nitpicking. Overall, I really liked your post ^_^

I think such movie has a hidden message or mission

Why? Why can't it be nothing more than a quaint love story that happens to be about two homosexuals? Do all heterosexual movies have a hidden message or mission?

reply

Just ignore redhook4u, he/she is obviously a misinformed, uneducated moron. I feel sorry for people that are that ignorant.

reply

Oh come on my friend, you should know better that anything comes from Hollywood isn't that simple. Though I agree the world is getting more tolerant on such issues I also agree that it happens because of such movies and ideas that tell people to do so. I, again, just think that there isn't any sense of doing "gay or lesbian", or promoting it in any way, Why? because clearly it is against the nature of our creation, you know a male dog and female dog makes a funny puppy, what does gay-lesbians make?!

It is just my thought, I realize that the there is mass movement on this thing, and there are pros and cons, as much as I disagree with the movie-theme I would like people treat "them" nice as it is only a phase of their life, eventually they will realize the flaws and change.

reply

This movie, whilst being a quaint love story, hardly portrays homosexuals in the most positive light.

because clearly it is against the nature of our creation, you know a male dog and female dog makes a funny puppy, what does gay-lesbians make?!

What does that matter? I've noticed that those who are the most vocally opposed to homosexuality often bring up our "nature" or procreation as an argument. What does that have to do with anything? Are homosexuals outnumbering heterosexuals? Are heterosexuals no longer procreating? Our planet is closing in on 10 billion people within the next thirty which spells disaster for our resources and ultimately, our species. If anything, homosexuals are a great means of population control. No, homosexuals don't procreate, but why should that matter? Fewer heterosexual couples are procreating also. I, myself, have no intention of rearing children (although my girlfriend states otherwise).

Homosexuality is in their nature because they cannot help who they are attracted to.

I would like people treat "them" nice as it is only a phase of their life, eventually they will realize the flaws and change.

Are you under the (erroneous) impression that homosexuality is a phase one goes through in their life, like listening to Marilyn Manson?

reply

"Are you under the (erroneous) impression that homosexuality is a phase one goes through in their life, like listening to Marilyn Manson?"

I am posting on IMDB forums for the first time ever just to say that is one of the funniest things I've read in ages. I admit I have got over my Marilyn Manson phase but can't seem to shake off this pesky alternative sexuality thing that has made my life a lot less easier for the last thirty years. The world could do with more coherent, intelligent and well-spoken people like yourself, BonIver.

Because believe it or not, slowly but surely accross the globe, people are becoming more tolerant and accepting of gay-themed movies. Get with it! Hidden message to tell you that being guy or lesbian is fine as long as you're okay with it? Not hidden message, my gramatically-challenged friend: self evident truth! Gay on the other had has the complication of being screwed with by homophobes is what I say.

It's funny, how so many straight people (even those claiming not being homophobic) are up in arms over gay-themed movies. Is it FAIR, that we, gays, only should be subjected to straight movies? Why can't we have movies WE can relate to? No-one is forcing you to see them.

...just sayin'...

>>>It's funny, how so many straight people (even those claiming not being homophobic) are up in arms over gay-themed movies. Is it FAIR, that we, gays, only should be subjected to straight movies? Why can't we have movies WE can relate to? No-one is forcing you to see them.<<<

I know this is likely going to be a waste of air (well, typed space), but I'll endeavor to answer.

For a lot of us (though, admittedly, not all), it isn't the fact that you're homosexual that's the problem. It's your life and your choice, and you're the one who has to stand in judgement at the end of your life. If you want to be a practising homosexual, I say more power to you.

What I have issues with is the fact that you cannot simply be homosexual. No, you must be accepted, approved of, and given special treatment. And, if someone says anything against homosexuality, they are labled as homophobic/bigot/misogynist/a hater/and/or all of the above.

Someone earlier in this thread said flat-out that God doesn't exist. That offends me down to my bone marrow, but for the common populace, there's no longer anything wrong with that. Whether you like it or not, this is hypocrisy in the extreme. If it's okay to insult my straight, Christian beliefs, then you need to suck it up when someone insults your homosexual or non-Christian (or both) beliefs. Neither side is correct -- insults solve nothing -- but you cannot say one is acceptable while the other is hate-speech, a hate crime, intolerant, bigoted, and/or homophobic.

As to 'no one is forcing you to see them,' you are correct in that we aren't being forced to watch the movies and TV shows. However, when more and more new things coming out not only include homosexuality but embrace it and tell the world it's okay, those of us who feel otherwise start to feel trapped and manipulated.

And yes, we are. There is now a homosexual channel on paid TV (Logo, I believe. Or, at least, that's what it was a few years ago.). This channel has exclusively homosexual friendly programming, advertising, and themes. Were I to somehow get a straight channel on live programming, the howls of outrage would be heard across North America -- but I would bet a substantial amount of money that not one of those objections could explain why Logo is acceptable and non-Logo isn't. I'm not talking about bashing, because as far as I know, Logo doesn't bash heterosexuality; it simply focuses exclusively on the gay lifestyle. Assuming that's the case, with all else being equal, non-Logo is considered unacceptable because it doesn't actively support homosexuality.

Hypocrisy, people. It goes both ways.

To conclude: just because homosexuality is becoming more and more prevalent does not mean that it must be a) accepted, b) approved of, or c) either/both of the former at the expense of those who feel otherwise. Live your life as you see fit, let us do the same, and please stop telling us that we must change ourselves and our beliefs to suit your worldview. I think you'll find that a lot more people have issued with THAT than with you being gay.

reply

I don't understand why the fact that homosexuality becoming more prevalent threatens you so much. Why would it bother you? There's tons of things out there I don't agree with or particularly care for about society that is prevalent that is actually harmful, yet that's the way it is. You just have to accept the fact that there are homosexual people living in the world that want to be approved of, have equal rights like any other citizen and be happy without being criticized again and again by homophobic people like you.

As a straight male, I'll just never understand what the hell the big deal is that people like to live their lives a certain way. You have your own values and other people have their own. You might as well write a long post about why you don't agree with people who are Jewish (yes terrible, but it's the same exact thing as being a bigot or racist in my eyes, I'm sorry) or like some kind of food you don't like. It's essentially the same exact thing. Stop being bothered about things you don't agree with, shut the hell up and just accept that society is not 100% exactly like the way you want it to be. It's not, simple as that.

reply

Okay, jcjh20. I'll 'shut the hell up about society not being 100% exactly like the way I want it to be' if homosexuals will (and racists, and religious fanatics, and, you know, PEOPLE AT LARGE). Hard truth: if they were quietly gay and living their lives, I truly would not care. It's their life, after all. I don't have to approve -- but, more importantly, **I do not want to know about it.** I'm the same with straight people. But a lot of gays are loud, in my face, and demanding special treatment, and getting pissy if ANYONE says something that isn't approving homosexuality. If, according to your worldview, I cannot take a public stand for my moral and ethical viewpoints, NEITHER CAN THEY. Pick one.

reply

I love how you're linking homosexuals with racists here... instead of homophobes and racists or any other form of bigot with racists... racists don't like interracial marriage in the same way, I presume, you don't like gay marriage. Faulty logic.

Umm...OK, well it still attempted the comedy and, seeing as humor is subjective it's still technically a comedy. You're not going to find every comedy in the world funny, but that doesn't mean the ones you don't find funny aren't comedies. That's just...ignorant.

This is a boring thread of conversation for the most part. Gay romance is being made because some people want to see it. Don't watch a movie because of how it's marketed. Read a few reviews first. Then this wouldn't happen.

(Though I would question calling this a romance. It's more an over-the-top comedy in my opinion. And a darn good one.)

I think it could be argued that ILYPM is a homophobic movie. After all Ewan McGregor plays quite an effeminate gay boy and Jim Carrey is a lying cheating con man. Both are convicts. Not exactly gay role models.
