Poppy = Female David Brent

Did anyone else get this? With all her little comments and general attitude of trying to have a good time all the time.

I did get that a bit! Especially the parts where there'd be one character explaining something to her and she'd have to make some cheesy, pointless interjection in-between each of their lines. Also, she liked to go for cheap sexual puns.

Although she definitely seemed to be liked by more people than Brent.

reply

I didn't think about this before now, but yes you're right. Especially when she's always interjecting little pithy comments while someone else speaks.

I do, however, think that she's a kinder person than Brent. She also works harder (hard to do, I know!)

Hehe, yeah, saw the movie last night, very enjoyable movie. But I kept thinking about her way of communicating that when someone says something, she remarks them with funny comments etc, just like David Brent. Very funny and creative :).

reply

Yes! That's why her character was so annoying.

I'd been searching for a way to explain it and you've hit the nail on the head.

She's so arrogant, like Brent. She thinks if you don't like her jokes then it's because you're a miserable sod when in fact it's because her jokes are awful.

reply

Too bad you are all wrong. Poppy is not trying to entertain anyone; she is merely being bold enough to be herself.

Reading this list, I would think you are all Scotts-in-training. Which is, I think, Leigh's point: to get you all riled up to the point where you hopefully recognize you are acting just like Scott.

Tough to be you, isn't it? as Poppy would say.

reply

But is she being herself?

It's interesting that when she is talking about professional issues she is usually a bit more restrained, when she is dealing with someone who needs help then she is quieter and more attentive... but when she's dealing with someone who might have some superior status over her, offering advice, telling her what to do (as a professional), she can't accept it without impressing her character on them.

Comments to Scott, like, "Do you think you can take it?", "Where you bullied/" aren't kind statements, they are challenges and taunts. She is actually bullying Scott herself with her behaviour and refusal to respect him for his status as a professional teacher.

Teaching teachers myself, I must say they are often the most resistant and insecure people when it comes to being taught anything.

reply

Haha, right right.
I think she must have gone to the David Brent School of Communication.
Hard to believe that people could get through a chat with Poppy without giving her a light slap across the face ("quit it").

I think she must have gone to the David Brent School of Communication.

reply

Yes! I'm so glad I wasn't alone in thinking this.

reply

Nailed it!

reply

Said the same thing as I was watching it.

"I have to return some videotapes"

reply

That’s good! Also, she reminds me of TV morning show hosts.

reply

Definitely, good observation.

It was extremely rude of her to keep doing these little jokey interjections ALL THE TIME when people were talking to her or instructing her.

Did the people she interacted with need to lighten up? Good question, maybe they did a little bit, but that is their choice to live the way they want.

I very much like what the bookstore clerk told her after she kept throwing out annoying little jabs at him in order to "make him lighten up". She said something like "having a bad day then, eh?", and he just looked up at her and simply said "No" and went back to his work. That communicated volumes, basically "Look Lady, I don't know what your trip is, or what drugs you are on, and I really don't care. I'm doing my tasks over here and living my life the way I want to and none of your inconsequential BS is going to make me dance to your tune."
