i think poppy cared deeply for others

i don't see how people can say poppy didn't care for others' feelings. sure, she joked around and flirted, but since when were those inherently bad things??? she never said a bad word about anyone. she gave scott many second chances--after he was racist toward the guys on the bikes (i personally would have dropped him as my driving instructor right then) and after he yelled at her. she treated the homeless guy like an actual human being (dangerous and naive as it may have been for her to approach him by herself). she constantly asked people what kind of day they were having. she could tell scott was troubled and she asked him about his life--his parents, whether or not he was bullied in school, if he was an only child. i think she was very kind to everyone, actually.

scott said she just needed to be adored, and maybe she did. but i don't see how that's bad. everyone needs to be adored, and poppy treated everyone like she adored them and wanted to be friends with them, so why shouldn't she hope for that in return?

I think that Scott was wrong about Poppy. She didn't "need" anything from anyone as she was very secure.

I did adore her though. Such a wonderful character and Sally Hawkins was great in the role.

Agreed. It's refreshing to see a character like Poppy, I really don't get the hate.

Break the rules and in a couple of years you will have a hell of a story to tell.

Omg! I LOVED Poppy! I've seen many movies where I relate to the female character. Poppy is the complete opposite of what I am as a person. I flip out about anything, keep to myself, can be rude or a bitch. I'm from NYC, lol. If someone stole my bike, I'd be upset for months and angry too. I loved this character because she makes me feel like I should be more happy.

Btw, I once had an angry driving instructor and I changed him immediately. He wouldn't even get as far as to pull my hair like he did in that one scene to Poppy. I would have reported his ass immediately! Holy crap!

She isn't mad that her bike is stolen, yet she's snide to the book clerk who doesn't talk to her --that's not consistent. When she takes the flamenco class, she treats the class, and the teacher, as a joke. I liked the flamenco teacher's explanation of the dance, giving it historical reasons for it's style, but that seems to go over Poppy's head--she just hops around looking for her sunglasses, which she thinks is funny. And she's almost immediately dismissive of the driving instructor, ignoring his somewhat eccentric instructions--what I see is when Poppy sees someone who is uptight, or unhappy, she treats them with sarcasm. I didn't see her 'caring deeply for others'. Just the homeless man.

I agree with everything you said! And all the comments too. I myself am "cursed" with a relentlessly cheerful disposition... sometimes it really confuses and confounds people. I think that's what this movie is about.

I know there's so much crap in the world. I know evil happens everyday. I know these things deep inside me. But still everyday I see tremendous beauty in the world all around me. And it makes me so happy to be alive :))

Entirely untrue.
