Is John Fielding trying to make me hate him?

Was watching the fourth episode and i realised my hatred for him, poking eyes and preaching. Infact he has been a bit of a git in the other episodes to, getting the woman killed, and being very nasty to the gay man.

Am i alone? Am i supposed to hate him? He's supposed to be the good guy. Meh, intellegent plot ideas!! how dare they.

i think tbh he had to be like tht so he wouldnt show any weakness he said that in last nights episode

i think he's the more cunning and down to earth and was the opposite to his brother and did what was needed to be done.

tbh you gotta consider the time period it was made in, 18th century

and he didnt do that bad
john Fielding got a knighthood for his efforts

I think those were brutal times, and inevitably bred brutal men. Although the Fieldings were rich 'gentlemen' as magistrates they dealt with the harder side of life.

That doesn't excuse some of Fielding's actions, but we cannot really judge them by modern standards.

[ aura]I prefer Imaginality to reality.

I also think they are highlighting the difference between the bothers, Henry is passionate and impulsive, he leads from the heart whilst John is clinical and leads from the head.

I don't hate him, I actually find him strangely attractive.
It is an opposite attraction, I am much more like Henry.

Henry annoys me because he's so impulsive and quite a bit spoiled. His kidnapping and near muderer were entirely his fault, joining his men in Seven Dials against their advice. In previous episodes he's made mistakes and caused difficulties simply by being so head strong.

John on the other hand is much more reserved and appears to think through his actions a lot more. This may be because he is blind, everything he does has to be carefully considered. John also has a lot more moral strenght than his brother, which may have to do with him being Catholic.

Personally I prefer John as a character as Henry can be too much of a silly old fool for me!

I thought John was the stronger of the two brothers. He was no ones fool. You have to take in account that it is the 1750s and yes it was brutal. When his brother was kidnapped do you really expect him to be nice. I think not ! I respected John for doing what he thought was morally right at the time. Henry is too weak in character. I can't put my finger on it, he doesn't have guts to think things through the way John does.

On the question of John attitude to Homosexuals. It was the 1750s. We have come along way since then. John, I am guessing, was totally against the act of homosexualty and according to him, needed flogging.

The best films are made in an intelligent format.

Not quite, I do recall he thought that if you turned away from the sin you could be redeemed. It is an attitude whilst not liberal, does have the background of his faith, rather than blind hate and intolerance. I actually thought that John was far more helpful and understanding than Henry was in that episode.

It is an excellent series, the best thing on the TV at the moment.
This is a rare jewel of a series.

I am not one for singing praise (especially to C4) but 'this' is the kind of programme that some of us have been starving for, years and years of BB - Chav TV has meant I rarely turned on the channel but hopefully if we are vocal enough they will realise that there IS an audience out there who want something a little more intelligent than 'reality programme number 274'.
