Im confused.

I watched the movie last night and loved it. I came on here to rave about it, but then noticed all the "Gay" threads on here. So I thought about it and yes this movie does have more naked men than any other movie I have ever seen and there is a distinct lack of naked women? So now I have this great movie that I cant recommend to my friends in case they think I am a closet gay. What was the director thinkging? The gay story was weak and had no ending so to speak. It just spoils a great surf movie.

I can't speak for the director, although he has said that the film is partly autobiographical. Since he's gay and is telling his own story you wouldn't expect him to make himself straight or leave those parts out, just like if you made a film you wouldn't make yourself gay.

As far as being afraid to recommend it, well, two words: Brokeback Mountain.

That film was almost 100% gay-themed (certainly way more than Newcastle) and it got 3 Oscars -- for director, script, and music, and came very close to winning Best Picture. All told it got 3 Oscars, another 78 wins, and 64 nominations.

It has a 7.8 among IMDb readers, out of 108,215 votes.

And it made $175 million worldwide.

Certainly if straight people had been afraid to recommend Brokeback Mountain to their straight friends it would not have all the awards, nominations, high ratings on IMDb, good reviews, and box office success.

EDIT: This is kind of funny. I JUST saw this review come up in my Google Alerts for Xavier Samuel (he's a friend of mine):

It is the kind of film that a gay guy could sit down with his straight mate and both equally enjoy without the weirdness that is often associated with movies like ‘Another Gay Movie’. What did surprise me was, for a film that I assume was supposed to be aimed at a teenage male audience, there are more shots of the male bare butts than there are shots of attractive girls in bikinis. Skinny dipping seems to be a popular pastime amongst Newcastle’s surfing youths.
