What happened?

What exactly killed Victor? I know all the guys got caught in a wave and had to ditch their boards; Andy got hit hard in the head, but what was going on with Victor? He was spitting up blood and I do recall hearing a loud snap as the water jerked his board with him attached. Did he break his neck somehow?
