I thought he was black in the flashbacks in the first movie and now he's not. Or maybe I'm not remembering things correctly? I haven't seen the 1st movie in a long time.

We never really see Briareos fully human in the first movie. From what it looked like, he was possibly caucasian.
In Ex Machina in flashbacks and through the bioroid clone Tereus, it looks like he was Asian/Japanese.
Personally I was more surprised at how Nike suddenly looked permanently sunburnt and how Athena seemed to have grown younger since the first film.
shareWell the designs and techniques were quite different. The characters were more like CG figures rather than the cel-shaded, cartoonier, brighter animation from the first one.
So Nike's tanned, big deal.
