Have to see Appleseed 1 first?

I bought Appleseed 2: Ex Machina when I saw it at my store because they have anime come and go really fast and never re-order a title once it's gone. But since it is Appleseed 2, do I have to see the first one to enjoy or understand the 'sequel'?

Or are they separate stories?

Thanks!

i bough Appleseed Ex Machina today. The shop fellow said it was not a sequel and that I could just watch it on its on. He obviously hasn't seen it because now that i've check it out, it is a sequel. Personally I'm going to try to find the first one before watching the second.

It is a sequel, but it is a separate story.

It does refer to things that happened in the last one, but its not necessary to see the first one to understand and enjoy this one.

I think it was deliberately made that way.

Thank you for the response I am going to order the BLu Ray now... And wait for the first one.

I just realized there's two 'Appleseed 1' 's.

The 1988 cel-animation version.
And the 2004 toon-shaded version.

Ex Machina must be a sequel to the 2004 version, not 1988 version?

So if I watched the 1988 version, then Ex Machina - it'd make no sense.

But the 2004 version, followed by Ex Machina, would?

2004 version, 1998 is a completely different movie but it's still based on the same series.

Shoot.

So I bought Ex Machina, and have the 1988 version on DVR. I'll watch the 1988 version, but will have to track down the 2004 version before watching Ex Machina.
