Who says you need a plot?

So whatever happened to requiring some semblance of a story or a script to make a movie.

Now don't get me wrong here. I grew up in Delhi (visited the Chandni Chowk Ramlila every year, absolutiely thrilled to se that on screen) and loved the first 30 min or so. But is it too much to ask for it to amount to or lead to something tangible? I don't know maybe it is. Somehow I just refuse to believe that Bollywood is completely barren when it comes to gifted writers.

Is it just me or are there others out there who feel the same way?

But as they say.. Yeh Bollywood hai mere yaar.. bas ishq mohabbat pyar... do hell with everything else..

P.S.: Kaala Bandar... WTF?

Early in the movie I thought the plot was slow in being established. But I do feel the movie had a plot. The plot was that the stress of fear triggered two communities that normally lived close and blended to suddenly turn on each other. That leaders tried to fan the flames. And that a man who is the son of a Hindu-Muslim marriage ended up shaking them awake to realize how irrational they had become due to a danger that lurked but never took a clear shape.

I think Monkey man is relatively realistic part, otherwise the story is so much full of loop holes that every minute i was asking... WTF?

I don't think there was any moment in whole movie when characters is behaving like real people in those conditions. Such a weak screenplay, i didn't expect that from Mr Mehra. AKS was much better than this

*SPOILERS*

ending would have been good had mehra ended it with roshan dying. the amitabh scene and roshan living feels like a cop out or maybe he had pressure from producers or something. but roshan's death scene was so powerful that the extended ending felt insulting. because the film is pretty under-rated and is a very good satire on religious fundamentalism.

Exactly my feelings!

would you mind posting a few of those WTF-plotholes to enlighten the community and have a fair discussion on them?

Stick to your smart plot-driven movies like Murder, Music & Lyrics, Hum Tum, Salaam Namaste, and Jannat.

This is not a movie.

This is a work of art.

Most bombay movie watchers dont know what art means - hence are unable to understand such movies.

reply

They should watch Bengali movies.

A work of art? How high are you, my friend?

reply

slightly higher up than you, pal! in the evolution terms that is... its sad that you couldnt get the purpose of the movie

reply

fully agree with kashyapnadig. Truly a piece of art. But then, not everybody likes shyam benegal stuff.

Very nice screenplay. Loved it! AB is an amazing actor.

Interestingly, I "watched" Ghajini yesterday, what a piece of faulty screenplay. And to the poster above, Ghajini kind of have a story but then can you really enjoy such a faulty script even if it has a story?

reply

frankly,there was no storyline.

and that was the gr8 thing abt the movie.

reply

It's a consequence of following dumbed down cinema and TV soaps.

I thought the same. This movie was just random movie clips joined together. The frequent mention of Kala Bandar time and again, gave me the worst of headaches. I could still see that feminine side in Abhishek that he developed in Dostana. Sonam was wonderful. I could see shades of RDB cinematography here. You cannot use the same kind of cinematography all the time. I was expecting something different. This movie really sucks. Wastage of money and time. I hated Amitabh's appearance! Why the hell did he have to come?!

He also compared this movie to slumdog.. It as so stupid!

reply

whoa, this movie's getting really hated on. it honestly wasn't that bad, nothing compared to 'rang de basanti' but it had its moments. it really needed a more solid screenplay, though, but its still worth a watch.

Eye-opener is an eye-opener, what it needs is the situation...quality cinema has been delivered and i seriously loved it

I felt Delhi-6 did well in reflecting how religious and cultural tensions can have devastating consequences upon ourselves and society, though I must admit that I thought the melodramatic finale wrecked some of the narrative's poignancy.

I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.
