Brutal review

http://film.guardian.co.uk/festivals/news/0,,2256320,00.html

"Well, it had to happen. Madonna has been a terrible actor in many, many films and now - fiercely aspirational as ever - she has graduated to being a terrible director. She has made a movie so incredibly bad that Berlin festivalgoers were staggering around yesterday in a state of clinical shock, deathly pale and mewing like maltreated kittens. She is also the producer and co-author of the script. If she'd done the location catering as well, they'd have had a Jonestown situation on their hands."

I read in the Evening Standard that in a personal written statement to the press, Madonna claims to have been inspired by the four directors whom she admires above all others: Godard, Pasolini, Visconti, and Fellini. Yet she only spells two of the names correctly. Yeah. Big admirer.

reply

Hey maybe Guy Ritchie wanted to let her make an ass out of herself so she stays away from his turf. Yeah what is up with her spelling her influences incorrectly. Moron!!

reply

What, she didn't thank Maddona, Gui Riche, or Quenten Tarenteno?

reply

Frankly, I think it's very unprofessional for anyone to judge Madonna like that. If you want to comment on the film, criticize on the film piece itself, do not to pass on judgement because of Madonna's fame and reputation. Why can't one be objective, impersonal, and forget about who made the film, just watch the movie as any other good/bad movie? It is ridiculous for a person make comments on Madonna's music career. I mean, after all, moviegoers are more familiar with films, and they may happen to be in the film business. Why should they comment on Madonna's performing and musical career? Does it have to do with Madonna's age? Does it have to with Guy Ritchie? NO CONNECTIONS!!!! FALLATIOUS LOGIC!!!!

IF YOU DO THAT, IT'S TOTALLY CRAP, SIMPLY A RANT. AND THAT, IS WHAT I CALL, S-I-C-K, PERIOD

I don't intend to be offensive, but I have to defend my opinions.

reply

You are so right - the media and critics are so close minded. Madonna is an artist - and this shows in Filth and Wisdom. It's never meant to be a popcorn easy wactching film. It's edgy, dark humour and intelligent.
The critics are and have always been hell bent on failing her.

I feel so bad for Eugene Hutz, I really hope this doesn't impact him if he wants to act in films later on.

reply

Eugene Was great fun to work with on this movie! Playing his Guitar in the Back of the Minibus! :)

I just remember members of the public asking us if we were shooting a 118 118 comercial - Men with moustaches. Oh how we laughed!

reply

I hope not; he was really, really good in Everything is Illuminated, and taking away how crap this film is, his performance really isn't anything to criticise; if anything, it's one of the few things that pulls it back.

Madonna fans are so empowered and resentful. I love how any relataliation about how poor this film is comes in the form of "What do you expect? Something from Hollywood?" or "Its edgey and dark and intelligent"

Firstly, the critics who are bashing this thing, basically all of them, are the same critics who would bash a Hollywood formulaic movie. Secondly, it is not that intelligent and it has its head up its ass in too many directions.

And wtf is up with citing four major directors like that and than spelling two of them wrong? What - did she just start watching them recently and considers herself a connoisseur of fine film? She is the equivalent of a 20-something film grad. who thinks he/she is going to be the next great filmmaker on the block because they have seen all those 'old masterpieces' - the only difference is that she has more than enough money now and the connections to get this thing made.

If I didn't even know Madonna's name was attached to this movie, I would still have hated it. It's just bad. Plain and simple.

"Sometime's including her music"?

She is a musician. And was revolutionary in music.

She is not a filmmaker. The critics 'bashing' her film are not doing so based upon her music.

"in the entertainment business". Yes...she is in the entertainment business. What does this have to do with movies again??

Nice way of twisting words to benefit your number one obsession ;)

reply

"....in the entertainment business, she remains one of the wealthiest and most famous women of all time."
Yeah, right, perhaps you meant "infamous", or maybe lewd, lascivious, pompous, arrogant, extravagant... the list goes on, but famous is not one of them.
She is a great singer, a horrible actor, and without seeing this movie yet, I am expecting a terrible screenwriting and directorial debut.
I will judge the movie on it's merits as entertainment, not on who made it. I just don't have great expectations.
