Weak movie

I didnt find any sense in this movie just random violence

reply

War = No sense.
Civil War = Random violence.

When the President does it, that means it's not illegal.

Finally, someone with IQ over 40.

This movie was pointless.

These kids are kidnapped from their homes and brainwashed/conditioned into a life of violent servitude. And they ultimately serve some fat greedy warlord's interests through the barrel of an AK47. A film that displays the realities of civil war is hardly pointless - unlike your post, which displays that you actually ...missed the whole point!

I know that you are a bad machine. That's why the factory keeps you here. Do you know how I know? I know because I'm from the factory. I make the machines.

We didn't miss anything, it was there, black and white. The movie was weak with no message but "child warriors is bad", and we don't need a movie to tell us that.

This movie was as intresting as watching a group of nazi soldiers murder and rape polish jews for 90 in Warszawa during WW2.

So you're saying Schindlers list was pointless too?

reply

Schindlers list told a good story. Johnny Mad Dog was a nice film, the acting was superb, the story wasn't all that great. It would have been really nice if Jean-Stephane Sauvaire would have adapted one of the many pieces of non fiction out there from former child soldiers. There are some very interesting stories out there that deserve to be told by a gifted film maker like Jean-Stephane.

lsdoxie, next time go for a more entertaining movie. Something like "White Chicks" for example, or Scary Movie 3 (the previous two were... pointless, number 3 rocks). Or maybe Meet The Spartans. I suspect these films would be more to your liking...

Meet The Spartans!?

reply

Considering it was based on a novel which itself was a fabrication, then yes. It was pointless. But I guess your social studies teacher let you watch it to see how "bad" the national socialists were, and like a typically brainwashed politically correct little sheeple you'll be parroting this your entire life.

"thought the film was like a documentary."

Like a documentary, as in being very informative (supposing it is rather authentic, as it seems to be, judging by reviews by people that work in the field and other feedback). And as in not having a strong narrative.

But certainly gripping. Solid acting, especially be the central characters. And some character development.

'Johnny Mad Dog' IMHO is far from pointless because it portrays the fact of child soldiers in an engaging way.

Some essential (e.g. tantal from coltan ore for high-capacity capacitors) or just pricey (diamonds) goods that we rely on in the richer and economically much more stable regions stem from these wartorn regions. The 'Lord's Resistent Army' (LRA) and countless similar mass raping, murdering gangs fight and kill for control over these kinds of businesses.

Some NGOs and commercial organisations are working on ways on how to identify and fingerprint the sources of specific batches of e.g. coltan ore, to differentiate between blood coltan and coltan which is not as ethically problematic.

Of course here us consumers and our buying/boycott decisions are of grave importance. How many killings and rapes were enabled by buying the tantal in you current cellular phone or wifi equipment? Just for example.

So informing the public is certainly not pointless. How'd you feel about civil wars raging in YOUR country for decades, fueled by foreign demand for certain products which are buried in your homelands ground?

Of course it is always helpful to broaden your view and substantiate your knowledge by reading a number of books from this AND from that perspective.

I think many of you need to watch the making of..to understand more about the film and it's purporse.

The child actors that you congratulate on their skills are all actually former child soldiers from Liberia (who were given a home and acting training for a year). Much of the small detail came from them and photos taken at the time (names, costumes, words, etc).

I don't think it was supposed to tell a nice, rounded hollywood story with a start, middle and end. But instead show a snapshot of what happened/s. You think the child soldiers that were taken from their homes had a nice introdution to the political situation? No.. minding their own business in their village and bam.. rebels come, you shoot your dad and you are one of them!

Also - as you cannot import guns into Liberia they had to use paintball guns imported from Japan.

All those who find no point in the film have found the exact point. The child soldiers have no meaning or purpose in their lives. It's been removed. Outside of violent activities they have little else.

Why do you refuse to remember me?
