Huge house - but he has to sleep on the sofa?

Just re-visited this movie after a few years and can't understand why Ryan Reynolds' character has to sleep on the sofa on the night before the wedding! Great big house - don't they have a few spare bedrooms?

Why would an engaged couple sleep in different rooms. The mother made it clear that she expected them to be sharing a room. It was necessary to keep up the illusion.

It is very common, becoming tradition, for people who live together and are engaged, to NOT sleep together the night before the wedding.
Usually the bride stays at her parents house.
In this case, they don't really have anywhere else to go that's convenient, so he just stays in another room.

I've even heard of some couples do this for the week or even month before the wedding.

I guess it's to give the illusion of that first special wedding night together.

You make a good point! Perhaps he just wanted to?
