What will make it 'the untold story'?

All the plot synopsis says right now is "Set in 1920's Vienna, this a tale of a little girl, who's godfather gives her a special doll one Christmas Eve". Does anyone know what will make it "the untold story" of The Nutcracker, as opposed to, well, the story that we've already been told in other Nutcracker movies?

And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

I read on elle-fanning.net that it had recently been renamed "Nutcracker – The True Story" so we'll wait and see...the movie will most likely focus on the original story rather than the ballet version because I believe there are some differences between the two?

Ah, I see! Thank you!

Yeah, the story on which the ballet is based has so many more details in the plot, such as how the Nutcracker became a nutcracker and why the Mouse King is his enemy. I feel like every other Nutcracker movie there's been has mostly been based on the ballet version and there's never really been a version that was more faithful to E.T.A. Hoffman's story. I've been wanting a movie that's based more on the story, so this is interesting news. It's one of my favorite stories, so I'm really curious to see how this turns out.

I'm not sure. Though it seems as though this is taking its inspiration more from the Hoffman story than the ballet, the filmmakers appear to be taking some creative license with the story as well (Elle Fanning's character is "Mary" instead of "Marie," Nathan Lane's character is "Uncle Albert" instead of "Godfather Drosselmeier," etc.). I don't know if they're just doing it to make their version of the story stand out or what. I can't remember at the moment if we ever learn Drosselmeier's first name in the story.

No idea.

So the real answer to this was that this felt more like one of those Syfy reworkings of a story, but in this case the Nutcracker.

It's not the Hoffmann story, it's not the ballet. It's a different story clearly taking inspiration out of different pieces.

Over all, I say it did so-so. Some parts of this were kinda cool. Others were like "huh why'd they decided to do that in that way". It's a passable for it's time movie. No where near a favorite for me, but I certainly don't see much to disdain about it.
