Not A Topic I Want To Bring Up
Hello All,
Well this truly isn't something I want to bring up or even acknowledge because I am an admirer of Ajay Devgan's tenacity and Kajol's talent but it would be hypocritical of me not to do so. I have always been very much against the nefarious plagiarism that Bollywood producers, directors, writers et al indulge in. Sanjay Gupta is a perfect example of this sort of verminous 'professional': Kaante was a scene-by-scene rip-off of Reservoir Dogs and ditto for Zinda, copied from Oldboy. And he is not alone in this behaviour, not by a long shot.
But I digress....
Here's a link to a U, Me Aur Hum trailer I just finished watching:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrexzGk41R0
It's a dialogue promo and it was added to YouTube only a few days ago. After watching the trailer, I'd recommend reading the wikipedia article for "A Moment To Remember", a Korean movie released in 2004.
Notice any similarities?
U, Me Aur Hum was one movie I was really looking forward to ever since I heard it was going to be made. I believed Ajay Devgan's statements to the effect that it is a simple, commercial movie, mostly meant to entertain and perhaps educate us just a little bit on love. I was glad to hear those remarks as it made it all the more unlikely that the movie would be a rip-off of The Notebook or any other Hollywood flick.
All of this is all the more reason why I am disappointed to find these apparent plot similarities between A Moment To Remember and U, Me Aur Hum. Just because one movie is not a scene-by-scene remake of another movie, a la Sanjay Gupta, it does not mean plagiarism cannot occur. Stealing 'big-picture' ideas or overall plot concepts is plagiarism too. Ram Gopal Varma did the right thing by paying tribute to The Godfather in the opening credits of Sarkar, despite the fact that Sarkar was not a scene-by-scene remake of The Godfather. It was the least he could do.
I am hoping against hope, that if U, Me Aur Hum has indeed been inspired by A Moment To Remember, even if it's partly, that they acknowledge this at some point during the movie.
Despite this objection, I am still looking forward to watching the movie as I believe it has been made with sincerity and will expose most of us to a story we have not heard yet.
