Stretch

I understand that there is Mythical Subtext behind the Star Wars Saga but I found most of this piece just a big stretch to find meaning over every little aspect of the 6 films. Any thoughts?

I agree with you, i was about to start a thread about this. I think that they really over thought about the whole thing.

By the lack of activity on this board I guess no one bothered to watch the damn special anyway. Oh Well...

Yes i do believe some of the things mentioned were a bit of a stretch but you find that in all aspects of art. Whether it be a painting, sonnet, music, play or movie. Sometimes you find parallels that even the artist didn't intend but that's one of the things that makes it so beautiful. Each person interprets it in a way that's meaningful to them.

It was only shown once on the air. Now the History Channel won't rebroadcast it or sell the DVD!

I'd love to talk about it if they only would show it again.

They actually just re-aired it today. I caught the last half while in a hotel room.

I luckily got it recorded on my DVR in High Definition. Looks great.

Well, as Joseph Campbell teaches us in "The Hero With a Thousand Faces," sometimes people who write heroic tales like Star Wars can, unintentionally, add in details that are similar to mythology just because all that stuff is in their head already as a permanent archetype

Like, have you ever noticed that elements of Greek, Norse, and Egyptian mythology are disturbingly similar at times? It's because people have always had the same basic ideas for stories...it's just human instinct to try to express them in different ways

So, to answer your question, no i don't think Lucas incorporated all that stuff INTENTIONALLY, but he might have added them in UNCONSCIOUSLY

(It's all in your head, dude. It's all in your head.)

erm...it's been awhile since your post but they just re-aired it and...

yeah, a lot of the stuff was obviously a big stretch and i'm sure lucas etc. had no idea about half of the stuff. but it was still interesting to see all the parallels and symbols and stuff. Another thing i thought was that a lot of the analysis or whatever could have been for other movies too, like Gladiator.

As a writer I don't feel that they were stretching at all. Star Wars is much more complex then many people may think. There are a lot of viewers with a more simple viewpoint who see the one layer of the film but it is obvious to many that there is something deeper to all these films.

Agreed. I think shallow people who don't think deeply about anything are under the impression that no one else does either. That's what I see going on in this thread.

The Nazi and Roman Empire influence on Star Wars are obvious, but I doubt Lucas was consciously influenced by everything the documentary claims.

This is based on Joeseph Campell's Power of Myth, who is turn is influence by new-age psycho-analyst Carl Jung. See the first three one-star reviews at Amazon:
