Supposed to sound like in a toilet?

Watched it on instant Netflix recently, wasn't a totally bad movie, thought parts where kind of funny, but through most of it the movie sounded like they where in an echo chamber. Was that on purpose to go with all the strangeness, or does netflix have the sound goofed up?
