Weird. Other weird movies?

Okay, am I alone in thinking this is one of the weirder movies out there? Yes, I know some things like naked lunch etc have weirder plots, but this is seriously out there. Not saying it's bad, just very, very, very trippy. Not sure how I feel about it actually, but I'd say it definitely ranks as one of the weirdest movies I've seen that still maintains an identifiable and clear plot. Are there others like it that are this weird but still "make sense?"

reply

"Big Fish", perhaps? A very different atmosphere from this one, more like a fairy tale, but still. Weird and 'sensical' at the same time - and funny and moving.

Just what popped into my head.

If you like this one, I would highly recommend Bunny and the Bull, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, The City of Lost Children, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. I wish there were more suggestions on this! I am on a lifelong quest to find the trippiest movie of all time!

Scott Pilgrim is a shallow hipster piece of *beep* with no originallity and is just making money off of *beep* internet hipster nerds.

I just saw Dogtooth a few nights before seeing Little Dizzle and remarked how *very* weird both were. TICOLD was certainly the funnier of the two!

For me Naked Lunch did not have an "identifiable and clear plot." I love Cronenberg though. That one just went over my head (assuming it was even executed properly). I can't say it makes me want to read the book either.

I love how the second poster mentioned Big Fish. Nice..

Reading the book will help in no ways in trying to interpret Naked Lunch. The book is weirder than the movie, if that's possible. One of my fav's, though, Cronenberg is a genius.

Weird movies:

Dune
The Evil Dead series
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Alice in Wonderland (Disney)
Blue Velvet
From Dusk 'Til Dawn
Brazil
Time Bandits
Buckaroo Banzai
The Wizard of Oz (The original Big Fish)
Haxan (old Swedish silent about witchcraft. Well worth the watch if you can find it.)
Babe
Anything with Christopher Walken (He's my favorite actor)
Hot Tub Time Machine (A reach I know. But I'm a sucker for a time travel movie.)
2001: A Space Odyssey
And of course,
Naked Lunch (but watch it high. If you haven't seen this movie high, you really haven't watched. It is completely weird when you are high. It'll leave you in a daze for the best part of a week.)

wait... did you say weird or messed up?

reply

Princess Mononoke is only weird if you're so used to Hollywood, and so unfamiliar with Japanese cinema, that you aren't ready to accept something that is great outside the realm of typical American melodrama. Aside from that, it's a great film, and (I hear) one of the best anime films ever. The ending was frustrating, though.

I love Brazil.

2001 is visual poetry.

Trippy or psychadelic movies are good when done right. There are threads dedicated to such films over on boards like Don't Look Now and Picnic at Hanging Rock. There you will find folks suggesting similar movies that are abstract or possessing plot elements not entirely spelled out for the viewer.

I love Cronenberg; just couldn't follow Naked Lunch very well.
