Offensive :(

Although this was a good movie...the OVERUSE of the phrase 'GD' irritates me.
And it's not just because I am a Christian, but the fact that these people don't care who they insult. I would NEVER say that or any word to offend another religion. It's not right. Religious people should respect one another and accept their differences. Even if you're not...it's still wrong. It's like calling a homo-sexual an offensive name...we are all equal.
And please no negative religion haters.

I didn't even notice such "overuse" of the word. That's kind of sad, if you watched this movie and that's all you got out of it.

reply

Wow! If you're that sensative about words maybe you had better stick to Disney movies.

That's not being sensitive. Aside from cussing just being wrong, it's unclassy.

If you're that into cussing and unclassiness, go watch Kill Bill or Halloween the remake. Cussing and trashiness galore.

I try to be like Grace Kelly, but all her looks were too

Ah, so it was you with your tight-bunched undies that reported my post above, eh? *laughs* So typical.

I suppose if I called you a "sexy bitch" like you have in your profile, along with wh0re and all sorts of other classy names like that, you'd have been okay. You hypocrites always pick and choose your battles to what is convenient for you.

By the way, love how you go cause waves purposefully on other forums, yet you complain about the use of a word in a movie. Pathetic!!!

And it's ridiculous for you or anyone to compare this movie to trash like the Halloween remakes.

I have no problem with any other "cuss" words. They are just words. But the idea of using God's name as a cuss word really irks me. I'd like to hear "Mohammed damn" in a movie and see what the response is. Heads would roll. I wish the Christian God would get the same respect.

reply

mohammed isn't a god, he's a prophet and some would argue that the islamic god and the christian god are the same, much in the same way that the jewish god is the same as the christian one. personally, i think it's just different cultures variations on beliefs. i'm not saying one or the other is wrong and i think stating that to someone is incredibly disrespectful to that person's faith.

i've never understood people who are so sensitive about swearing and i've especially never understood why GD is so morally wrong. being frustrated and exclaiming for god to damn something. the majority of people today swear and it seems most of those who are offended by swearing are above fifty. there will obviously be exceptions, but the negative connotations associated with these words are slowly dissipating. there are times when swearing is inappropriate, but those times should be obvious to anyone who has the slightest tact. as for saying GD being the same as referring to someone using a derogatory epithet, i have to disagree. the latter being used to directly insult the person and cause agitation, whereas saying goddamnit or jesus christ is usually used to express frustration, anger or irritation and if offense is taken it's almost always unintentional. now calling using any of these (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_religious_slurs) when directed at someone, yeah, that's obviously highly offensive and anyone who actually harbors hate against someone just because of their faith, sexual orientation, beliefs, or any other thing that is different from oneself is just ignorant.

Exactly.

I guess it's just hard for some people to see where those who are bothered by these phrases are coming from. I'm not necessarily opposed to using them at all, such as was pointed out in times of extreme frustration or anger. They mean something then. But it's the idea of throwing the names of God and Jesus around in conversation like they mean nothing that doesn't sit well with me. But like I said, some just won't be able to empathize with that, and I guess that's ok.

Some way that is always the response to asking someone not to use the word. I am not religious. I dislike the use of GD, as any medical condition (in The Netherlands, where I am from, cancer, typhoid and cholera are much used words to express one's feelings. In Dutch, obviously)

As I am a sort of teacher, that gets to work with different kids every week, I usually lay out the rules:
1 - I am in charge
2 - My first name is to be used when adressing me
3 - Do not swear using religious or medical names/ words, or (as a rule to higher educated groups) only swear in English.

Words like *beep* and *beep* are used as swear words in Dutch too. Most kids know them. I usually mention the Dutch word for *beep* being 'kut' (sounds like (to) cut) is in fact English, but not a word typically used for swearing.

My message: swearing is allowed, just use words that ar not disrespecting anyone or -thing.

Sometimes I get to discuss my reasons why and I usually tell them instead of any words you usually swear with, now use the word 'refrigerator'. They get pretty fast my point. Swearing is stupid.

Maybe you should avoid "R" rated movies... Most R rated movies...are for violence, swearing, sex and nudity.......not your faves either I imagine.

Dammit, God.

We watched this movie again with friends over the weekend. We counted the use of the word only SEVEN times. That is not overuse by any means!!

Don't watch it then.

Your views are not valued and the industry will not change because of you. So, you can either change yourself or accept it.
