Ali seems to be an observant Muslim.
From the conversation in the car with Ali's wife and his nephew, I come to understand that his wife is not able to visit Mecca due to the fact that she's not a Muslim.
How can Ali get married to a non Muslim woman? it's against Islam and it's a sin.

Yes it its true. Muslims are permitted to marry 'the people of the book' - muslims, jews and christians. I know this as I'm a muslim myself.
shareI think fasx786 is correct. The whole thing about a muslim not allowed to marry anyone outside his/her faith is just one of the many false and extreme versions of the quranic interpretation. Though I might add that even though it's permitted it's not embraced open heartedly...in fact most people look down upon it. But it's isn't rare, illegal or forbidden.
shareI agree with what @sodominion said. Indeed, Islam permits marrying the 'people of the book' (i.e Christianity, Jewish) However, it has been unusual for such marriage due to the differences in the interpretation of the religion each other is practising.
