Gael Garcia Bernal's character has restored my faith in humanity.
Though he may only be fictional, at least the inspiration for the character or even the idea gives me hope that not all men/mankind are scum.
When I first saw the TV ad/trailer for this film, I thought it was the usual story of a sleazy guy who exploited people for his own selfish happiness, bad husband/father, etc.
But he was such a devoted and humble man. I like how instead of staying at a fancy 5 star hotel/resort, he opted for a more simple hut on the beach. The way he appreciated the simple beauty of surroundings and even that cute elephant lol. Just trivial things like that.
Though he may have succumbed and joined the tourists to go and exploit the local prostitutes (which was what I feared he would do) he had a change of heart :)
And of course, he did eventually lower his guard and he and Cookie slept together, but at least it wasn't out of sleaziness.
I find him to be noble and innocent. He was only human anyway. He didn't even care about the money anymore, he just wanted to return to his family...
This is coming from a point of view of someone from a third world country (I'm originally from Philippines) who had a bitter outlook on humanity. And I found the movie to be very realistic. So in conclusion, in this crappy world we have with all the corruption, tourist/prostitute mutual exploitation, filth, and seedy men and women, I'm given hope that there is a God :) And I look forward to watching some more of Lukas Moodysson's films.
