Tychus + Mengsk (SPOILERS)

One part of the story that bothers me is that Tychus is supposed to have been working for Mengsk all along. Why not simply have him kill Raynor at the beginning of the game, after all he is number one on Mengsk hitlist, with the exception of Kerrigan. It also doesn't make sense as to why Mengsk would allow Tychus to actively fight against him and ruin his reputation if he can kill him at a moments notice. Maybe there is an explanation coming in one the expansions but it just seemed like a weak point in the story to try and give it more conflict/edge.

"with the exception of Kerrigan." <--

The way I see it, Mengsk had 2 major threats to his empire. 2 people that had it in for him. One is a drunken has-been of a rebel that nobody really took seriously, and one is the ruler of an alien race that could roflstomp the entire Dominion at a moment's notice.

Obviously Mengsk's priority would be Kerrigan. And Mengsk knew that 1.) Raynor is obsessed with Kerrigan, and 2.) for Kerrigan, Raynor may be the last connection to humanity.

So the logical conclusion is.... if anyone's going to be able (and crazy enough) to get close to Kerrigan, either to take her down or to try and save her, it's going to be Raynor. That's why Mengsk recruited Tychus to kill Kerrigan. Because Tychus could get close to the only man that might actually get close to Kerrigan. (Mengsk might even have known some things about the artifact and what his son was doing, consider what happens in the secret mission.) He didn't when or if that would ever happen, but if it did, Mengsk knew he had to have a man there to make sure Raynor didn't manage to save her.

Raynor's rebellion was completely secondary to Mengsk. He had no reason to worry about it before Raynor stumbled on that old confederate adjutant. And it's not like Tychus was actually loyal to Mengsk, so he wasn't going to report in and say "by the way, we're coming to Korhal to ruin your reputation". If Tychus found a way to get out of the deal without having to kill Kerrigan (and go against Raynor), by, say, bringing Mengsk down or even killing him, of course he would take that option. So he helped Raynor as much he could, since his mission wasn't to stop Raynor, only to stop Kerrigan.

Tychus would not have agreed to take on Raynor.

Besides to sell the deception it was obvious that Tychus was to be allowed free reign over his actions.

If he didn't help Raynor then he would not have been able to get close to Kerrigan.

Raynor was the only one to have a shot at Kerrigan.

Mengsk wanted Kerrigan dead not just for the Dominion but also for his secret allies and masters -remember there was a hidden lab and a Hybrid was being conceived.
