Why were the two boys jerking off next to each other in the funhouse?

I couldnt understand why they did it, or even why it was included in the film if it was of so little significance..

I think they were getting off to the screaming. It was included to show how close they were; have you masturbated in the proximity of a friend? That's how comfortable they were.

No, have you?

Just on public transit.

If you watch the scene moments later they wipe the contents of their hands on the hair of some girls. My perspective was they were trying to creep people out who were going through the ghost train and using their seminal fluid to represent 'ectoplasm'.

EW! Yeah, they did do that.

reply

Oh yeah, that was definitely IT. Retarded.

They could have been speed wanking...

It's a contest (among stupid, stupid boys ) where you and whoever, masturbate, and whoever ejaculates first wins the contest.

It's the stupidest thing ever, but a speed wanking contest could be a possibility

James Bond: Why is it that people who can't take advice always insist on giving it?

reply

I think it shows how incredibly close they were as friends. It was a moment of sadism shared by both of them as they smeared their ejaculate in the hair of the people on the ride in the funhouse.

reply

I definitely think it was a way of showing just how close of friends they were.

If you look you'll notice that the first thing Joe did before they scared the girls was move his friend out of the way, if he had it on his hands then he would have covered his friend's jacket first. The more obvious answer is that it shows just how close friends they really were.

I think the close friendship thing is only superficially the explanation - yes it would be difficult to imagine them doing this without being close, or intimately involved with one another - but I think it is more to do with showing the characters at a time in their lives when they are no longer 'innocent' kids, but are becoming young men, and all of the confusion and uncertaintity that brings.

This 'coming of age' is often depicted in movies by having a character do this -and its certainly not desperately unusual for this to happen in real life.

The is also a nod to what is going to happen later in the film with Ruth, then Evelyn, and it is a hint that perhaps Joe is not quite ready or mature enough to deal with the realities he is faced with.

Not sure if I buy the “how close they are” story! If you people used to jerk off in front of others you felt “close” to then stay the hell away from me you bunch of creeps !! the boys where pulling a stunt like the post by sheabennett suggested. Either that or I am very old fashion. The movie was great though and in my opinion way underrated !!

I don't think it was really a gay thing--I think they just wanted to freak people out. That said, I'm going to wear a hat next time I go to the fun house :x

I know it's the kind of thing plenty of sexed-up teens get up to, but I also detected a gay undertone to it.

The main character does not seem to feel fulfilled by sex with women. As a teen, he has to be coaxed into it. The whole film is about how he abandoned his best mate and how he feels tore up about it. Notice how he doesn't try to pick up on his dead friend's wife, but just hands her a cheque and jets off? Just my 2p.

Jayhawk-18: "Notice how he doesn't try to pick up his dead friends wife...?"

This isn't Ghost. Joe wasn't the kind of guy to hit on his friends grieving widow after running away 25 years earlier.

I can understand the gay undertone part, but it was meant to show his closeness to Boots.
