Was Joe really happy living in Hollywood?

I thought by the end he'd probably decide to return to the UK.

He didn't have many if any real friends in America. I thought his visit home would make him realise it was the only place that was real with people who truly cared about in it. He could easily keep a flat in London for work given his wealth.

I was thinking of this sort of thing when I returned home for Christmas from London. I went to the local pub on Christmas Eve & everyone was there. A friend even commented how in London that would never happen & you'd have to arrange to meet friends in a pub.

As much as I love London I don't plan on staying here forever. It's ironic because when I was younger I couldn't wait to move here & ashamedly thought home was boring in comparison.

Home isn't perfect, there are people I hate as well as people I love, but it's where the heart truly is.

What was Joe going back to? I know he'd cleaned up his act but I still think a proper fresh start was in order.

At least it seems in your case your home is still as you left it. I again live in the neighborhood I was born in and the place has changed unrecognizably. From outer suburb of a large city to a major (traffic) centre. And back then I used to think my city was boring now I miss the laidback atmosphere.

As for Joe I think living with his mother and sister and running into Ruth in the market would have been not ideal. He is making a fresh start just not in his childhood home.

I don't think anyone living in Hollywood is happy. I've been living in Los Angeles for 20 years and people are so fake and pretentious. They are brainwashed by themselves basically. More money, more junk, more desire, and never satisfied, it's a vicious cycle and very sad to watch.

How do you deal with those types of people? Have you considered moving somewhere you'd be happier?
