Acting, Costume Design and Cinematography saved this..

I have seen several Coco movies over the years so I was very familiar with her story. I was looking for something new or fresh-a new change of perspective on the late great Coco Chanel.

Unfortunately, this was not the film. It was rather slow at times and dragged out. But the acting and look of the movie itself was fantastic.

Did Coco also not smile very much? I wonder.

A woman way ahead of her time.

Still worth a watch if on cable.

7 out of 10.

Coco avant Chanel. The clue is in the title don't you think?

I'm not in love with the movie myself, yet I think it's beautifully done.

I agree, although it's the only movie about her life i've ever seen.

The thing about this movie is that it's a slow burner, it took me time to relate to the story and characters, but once i had, maybe an hour in, i found the movie really mesmerizing and very touching. Alessandro Nivola's charisma in that role is essential to the movie and as soon as his love story and very gentlemanly opposition to Balsan kicks in, the movie really takes off and becomes enjoyable. Beautiful cinematography and costumes as you mention. Tautou slowly but surely becomes Coco and Poolvorde pulls off a nice performance too (i love him ever since Man Bites Dog in 92, great Belgian/French actor).

At last, i was about to give the movie a 6/10, but then the untimely death of Boy and her reaction to it, that small amount of tragedy at the end greatly improved the movie as far as i'm concerned.

So all in all, same rating as you: 7/10.
