I may have missed something through not watching closely enough, but at the beginning she comments about his 'old uniform' and then towards the end of the movie after he awakens her to tell her he'll be gone for 5 days he runs off and takes off his beret in exchange for a soldier's cap.
Is it supposed to be about how he's only pretending to be an officer so that she's less worried?
Well, he has the stars of a captain, and that never changes. Then again it could have been that wasn't paying enough attention to note that... Could be that he's just two different persons, one around his grandma and the other a soldier, braiding her hair after he beat the crap out of somebody.
shareShe means old in the sense that it's worn, not old. He's definitely an officer or he wouldn't have been in the army those 7 years and he wouldn't have had the clout to have her visit. I guess there's a good chance he'll die and his men don't need the hat as a symbol. That's just my guess.

i was confused as well about this gesture with the baret. Maybe they're remembering something from his youth, when he went away to become a soldier. Hmm.
