Why doesn 't the kid sell her the cigaretts


When she goes to the market she's looking for cigarettes and supplies for the troops. She meets this one kid and ask him how much his cigarettes are but he never replies. He just stares at her. Why doesn't he answer

I think it is because he knows (whether it is the way that she is dressed, her accent, or he just doesn't recognize her) that she is a Slavic Russian rather than a Chechen and he resents her and all Russians for the war that has been taking place in their region. The older woman, Malika, whom she befriends mentions that many of the youth in the area hold grudges against the Russians.
