Grandson gay?

I was wondering if her grandson is supposed to be gay? When she asks why he is not married he says that he will not tell her why out of respect for her (or something to that effect). Does he not want to upset her by telling her this? While I don't totally know the Russian culture and how this would be viewed, where I come from a man braiding a woman's hair in a film would often be used as a signal of homosexuality.
