Not a remake! Just movie inspired by Suspiria

Per a recent interview from Tilda Swinton during her promo tour for Doctor Strange, she stated it's not a remake just a movie inspired by Suspiria!

There are a lot of people who often say that about remakes. If it is not a remake, then why bother naming it 'Suspiria'? Tilda seems to stretch it by saying it is just inspired by 'Suspiria' and not a remake. It even sounds like it has the same plot. It would have been like Al Pacino said Scarface anno 1983 was not a remake of Scarface anno 1932. Because it was. We also call 'A Fistful of Dollars' a remake for a reason, it was because it was ripping off 'Yôjinbô' in plot and plot structure. Stop being gullible, only a few actors have an understanding of movies and Tilda Swinton saying it is not a remake makes it obvious she has no understanding of movies.

I'm inclined to agree, especially when many of the characters have the same names as in the original film. If this is only "inspired by" the original, why use the character names from the original?

Imagine the pitch for a new Raiders of the Lost Ark: "We're making Raiders, but it's only inspired by the original and not a remake. In this version, Indiana Jones is a Nazi, and Toht is a famous archaeologist." Doesn't make any sense.

All of that said, I'm actually looking forward to this remake, especially if it's R rated. There's so much awesome shock scenes in the original that I can't imagine this will have the same impact being PG-13. "Instead of razor wire, we're going to use bungie cords!" 😱

I am not looking forward to this remake, especially when Argento knew nothing about it. What makes it worse is Tilda Swinton insists it is not a remake, which makes it so much more insulting to Dario Argento. It is rumored by the way that his brother Claudio Argento sold the copy rights without asking older brother Dario. The man who created the movie knew nothing about it! 😩

I love Dario's movies. I've been obsessed with them for at least two years now. I doubt that I will watch this remake, since it is basically insulting to one of the few directors I respect. But if you feel you want to watch it, I am not holding you back. You're making the choice after all.

But what about Tim Burton's Alice and Wonderland? That film has the same title and characters but the plot is not even remotely the same as the animated film. That film was inspired or "rebooted-sequel?"

reply

Yeah...not a remake, just a movie with the same title and plot...okey dokey...

hahaha i love Tilda but thats just absurd

Perhaps she means "not a remake" in the terms that it won't try to be a shot for shot lazy attempt like the Nightmare remake was. It will try something new or reconfigure the plot beats of the original.

Could be a good thing, but whether or not the film turns out to be good is yet to be seen. Like how THE MUMMY (1999) is technically a remake. We don't need another remake like PSYCHO (1998), that's for sure.
