It's interesting to note that nowhere in the movie do they say that the area where the movie's taking place was before WWII a part of Poland. So let's see: Nazi Germany invades Poland, the Polish armies retreat to the East and are in turn attacked by the Soviets. The Soviets take the Polish soldiers prisoner, the ones they don't murder on the spot that is, and murder them at Katyn, which is, correct me if I'm wrong, pretty close to where this movie's taking place. Now this sheds a different kind of light on these events and some of the people's actions, which is something the makers clearly tried to avoid (why show the whole truth and make the viewers think if we can do all the thinking for them and present only what they need to know?). Correct me if I'm wrong but I hear some Belorussians and Jews (communists probably) welcomed the Soviet invader with flowers and helped them (NKVD) kill the Poles. As a result we have: Poles, Belorussians, Nazis, Soviets and Jews all hating each other and allying themselves with one or more of the other group to help them fight the others. In short, it's a violent mess but it appears, as Kurt Vonnegut had said, Poles were the ones that got the shortest end of the stick, n'est-ce pas?
It's another example of Hollywood distorting reality to achieve its brainwashing result. Turn off your gray cells and enjoy the show.
