Anything like the 1999 movie based on The Talented Mr Ripley?

I'm wondering whether or not to watch this movie...the only reason I'm considering it is because I absolutely loved the movie starring Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, etc. which was based on the same book. Can anyone tell me whether these movies are anything alike? Or is it a waste of my time considering the many negative comments on here?
