Was this a downer flick or not?

Paddy was great, he looked like a guy ready to die the whole time, with that painful withdrawn look.

But why was his beetch of an ex so into tormenting him? What was she getting out of it?

What are they doing? Why do they come here?
Some kind of instinct, memory, what they used to do.

She wanted to reconcile and he didn't. Her constant calling is the evidence along with trying to get him outside during the divorce hearing.

reply

That is what I wanted to think. But she seemed to be suggesting the opposite, more like being a massive tease than in love.

reply

She was throwing out the suggestion, then when she saw his reactions she always tried to pull it back like it was a joke. Remember, she's bitter and still in love with him. So, she's got that "I want you to feel my pain" thing going on.

Note, I thought what you did after the first time I watched it, but when you go back you see lots of hints that show what she was about (and it also explains final scene).

reply

Yeah, I think you are right. She was a complicated woman. It was an interesting movie in that it wasn't so blatant. Also, the novelist is a good writer.
