Great movie if you're an adult

The negative comments about this movie are disheartening, and I can only assume there are posters who have not matured to the point of being able to see the beauty of this fine film. It is a quiet movie, but has absolutely hilarious moments, which isn't surprising, since the screen writer also wrote Sideways and About Schmidt. Grown ups will love this movie.

I just seen the movie and I loved it. It was a really great movie, very touching :)

Like Sideways, this film examines the subtle inner workings of the human condition. It's poignant and uplifting if you have the right frame of mind. Alexander Payne continues to write/choose material loaded with introspection and pathos, proving once again that he is one of the best directors working in modern cinema. This film and Sideways are his best work, but Citizen Ruth and Election are not to be missed. Pretty good track record.

It wasn't a patch on "sideways"!

It's not a bad flick, one of the better from last year in fact, but I wouldn't put it on the level of Sideways or Election. For me it's a little bit behind About Schmidt, slightly ahead of Citizen Ruth. Some of the dialogue is forced. While in general Payne tries too hard to make everything easier to digest. I also thought the first half was too narration heavy. Still, an overall good movie, but not really the idiosyncratic art I'm used to from Alexander Payne.

reply

a little behind About Schmidt... wow

reply

At 24 you're supposed to be an adult...

Yet most 24 year olds aren't more mature than I am and Im 16. So that either means I am mature for my age or its true that men don't mature until 30. I loved the movie, I don't think most people my age would though.

...just finished it on HBO. It was a very well written, well acted film. I agree with your subject line!

Clooney is one of the all time great actors.

I was 17 when I saw this. (Not sure tough, maybe 18) but I loved it. I watched it with my mom and I love Shailene and I taught she was great in this but for the most part, I could relate to her. I lost my dad suddenly...The scene with her in the pool when she finds out her mom's life is over then she goes under the water and cry...oh my god... Probably the saddest thing I've ever seen. I wanted to be able to do that and to be there and give her a hug.

The whole movie was far from being boring. And I'm into scary movies or movies like Mean Girls !!! :D This was so good regardless of how old you are, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I even have it on DVD !!! :D

The ungrammatical filth lame script show this movie indicated the script connected to no audience in particular. I suppose HBO - the cable entity which competes for the lowest standards- purchased for pennies the rights to show this garbage.

Clooney, not a parent in real life, isn't despicable as a male parent. Being despicable might involve being commited. Look up the script. "You little *beep* 'retard', ' You F'ing F'head'and similar garbage is proudly delivered by George Clowney'. *rotflmao*

*beep* Mom" replies the female kid for no reason except she is supposed to be is a nasty girl whose vocabulary is limited to 'siht', 'what the *beep* 'btich' and 'so F'ing what' as the 'dad DUH'has no clue. Guess it's a good thing Clooney himself has no children. I am admiring Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt as actors. They both seem to care their kids and grandkids will be looking at movies they made.

Adults come in all ages, and being older than 21 doesn't necessarily qualify. This is a very free-form film, compellingly written and sensitively acted, with a few detours and many surprises. It's a great movie for those who don't want easy answers. 8/10 stars from me.

I honestly thought I was going to hate this because I usually despise George Clooney - he always just plays himself. Here, though, he was so vulnerable and easy to relate to for once. The whole movie had me alternating between laughter and tearing up. I should have known not to doubt Alexander Payne - he can get great performances out of anyone! I also love his tone; many of his scenes are almost painfully awkward, but intentionally so - you want to nervously laugh or hide your face.

Random side note: this film reminded me a lot of Little Miss Sunshine, which I was surprised to learn was NOT a Payne film. Anyone else feel this way?

I pronounce you man and wife. Proceed with the execution.

Finally a comment I can relate to.I think this was a fine movie but it will always be the only film in which I felt George Clooney acted well above his usual phoney roles. I never liked him to be frank, but he was fabulous in this film!

reply

Took me a while to watch this because I feel the same way about Clooney.
But I really enjoyed this film.

We just loved it and I'm no Clooney fan.

I love this movie. I liked it the first time I saw it in the theater but liked it even more the second viewing.
