I can't imagine being attracted to Brian
He didn't come across as attractive to me at all.
Might the wife have been attracted to him because she knew he and her husband wanted opposite things? A way to negatively impact her inattentive hubby?

Well to be fair, the only time we see him is when he's on the defensive and a little scared he might get beat up or killed by a jealous husband. Probably not his shining moment.
shareThe wife was, by all accounts, a pretty horrible person so perhaps it's not surprising that she hooked up with somebody you think is unappealing. One of the things I like about this movie is how imperfect all the main characters are. The wife gets away with it all simply because she's vegetative and dying.
shareOther than the opening seconds of the film, we never see Clooney's wife as a functional human being, but we know she's a pretty one.
Brian's wife is pretty, too. And nice.
So we can figure that Brian had "something" to attract both his own wife and Clooney's wife, regardless of his looks.
I'm guessing it was his "successful salesman's drive" and charisma. Maybe he's a self made man(Clooney has a family fortune.) Maybe Brian has a lot of money. Maybe he "goes after what he wants." (Pretty wife, pretty mistress.)
And we can figure that Clooney wasn't attentive to his wife given his law practice and his family land issues. So Brian just slipped in there.
Director Alexander Payne knew what he was doing in casting that particular actor. If he had cast a real handsome pretty boy....we wouldn't be forced to consider "other issues" in the attraction of Clooney's wife to Brian.
