Filmed where???

Can anyone tell me where THE BAND'S VISIT was actually filmed? There is no town called "Beit Hatikvah," is there...?

No, there is no town in Israel called "Beit Hatiqwa", but its name, meaning "House of Hope" was chosen carefully. I presume the film was shot somewhere in a small town in the Negev area.

That would be my guess too... Close to that other mythical town reached when you TURN LEFT AT THE END OF THE WORLD, huh ;-)

Thanks, Timberlady1!

You could not have said it better !!! YES THERE!!!

I also thought it looked like the town where Beitar Provence took place. Anyone know where that one was filmed?

reply

I agree that the city name was chosen carefully because of it's meaning but that's not it..

there is a town called "Petach Tiqwa".. where if I remember correctly the band plays at the end.
arabs commonly pronounce "Pe" as "Be" which explains the confusion that led to the whole story.. the band finding their way to "Beit Hatiqwa" instead of "Petach Tiqwa".

loved the movie :)

Of course the confusion of the names is the main issue and aim, but then the name of the well thought over choice for the wrong place "Beit Hatiqwa" was no coindidence.

Also loved the film, but why would an Arab Music Center open in Petach Tikva, or all places ("Em haMoshavot")? Wouldn't it make more sense in Nazareth, or Sakhnin?

reply

The film was shot mostly in Yeruham, a town in the Negev desert in the south of Israel.

reply

So... a bit south of Beersheva...? Todah rabah, Tomerto-1!

One of the few weaknesses in Avi Nesher's "Turn Left at the End of the World" was, in my opinion, its failure to create a real sense of place. The film was shot on a set near Kibbutz Sde Boker (Ben Gurion's kibbutz), as the make-believe "development town", which, having lived in on a while back, never convinced me. "Bikur ha'tizmoret" was shot around the town of Yeruham, which is a little larger than the fictional "Beit ha'tiqvah", but was shot in a way that made it look real.
