So contraception and abortion were illegal in Romania

But they were still able to organise an illegal abortion.
Then surely there must have been contraceptives on the black market as well, right?
I'm just wondering why they were able to obtain the one but not the other, because of course having access to the pill or condoms would have made things a lot easier and eliminated the need for an abortion in the first place.
Does someone here know more about the time period and can shed some light on this?

I'd ask you to play House, but you'd be a weird example for our kids.

Even today, when pills and condoms are legal and available to everyone, women still get unwanted pregnancies, so I don't know how this is so relevant.
But also, from 60's to 70's the contraceptive methods were illegal so the unwanted pregnancies was a big issue. It was a very common situation in that period.
if you want to know more you should read about <decretei>, the kids born in that time. it's one of the biggest tragedy in the Communist Romania, but also has an interesting twist.

Rather than go to the trouble, expense, & danger of buying contraceptives on the black market, many people in the world, even today, use the withdrawal method. In fact that's what Otilia & her boyfriend did.

This movie was set in the early 80s so I guess abortion in her case was illegal not only in Romania but pretty much everywhere considering that she was almost 5 months pregnant! That would have been a highly controversial even today!
