Why couldn't Emilia and Jack have another baby? (Some Spoilers)

I understand that when Isabelle died, Emilia needed time to grieve. But I'm wondering why they didn't try to have another baby? It was devastating to lose the baby, but Emilia was acting like that was her last shot at having a baby. Her and Jack could have had another baby when the time was right. I've met women who lost a baby and, as a result, it rendered them unable to conceive again. I thought that was the case with Emilia at first, but it seems it wasn't.

I'm just wondering why neither one of them brought up the possibility of trying for another child. From what I've heard, sometimes doctors recommend couples try for another baby. It seemed neither Jack nor Emilia wanted to try again. I thought at least something would be mentioned when Carolyn is revealed to be pregnant and Emilia freaks out. Jack could have said something like "We can try again."

It was that she just lost a baby and could have another, she lost Isabelle and wanted HER back, she wasn't just trying to have a baby to just have it...

I thought maybe it was because she figured that without Isabelle, Jack may not want to continue the marriage. Isabelle is the reason why they got married in the first place. If Emilia wasn't pregnant, I don't think he would have left Carolyn and William. He claims to have been very unhappy, but when Emilia suggested that he separate legally from Carolyn and move in with her, he said no. But he changed his mind immediately when she said she was pregnant. Suddenly, Carolyn and William were on the back burner, when he had just told her they were his life. Their marriage nearly did dissolve following Isabelle's death, and Jack even asked her why they were together.

I agree. While in my personal view, another child is the LAST thing any of these dysfunctional characters need in their lives...I would think it would be a pretty normal thing for them to consider. Not to "replace" Isabel per se, but if they enjoyed having a child (in addition to William of course) then why not try again?

I actually assumed during the first 2/3 of the film that something was medically wrong with Emilia meaning that Isabel was her only chance at motherhood.

I just don't see it being that easy for either of them, you would think it would be harder for her, but I feel it would be most difficult in the long run for him. She will eventually welcome another child in her life but he may feel he has had his fill.

I take it you don't have children. When your child dies the last thing you are thinking about is replacing them. This isn't like a mis-carriage, when you have some attachment but never really got to have the child, she held her daughter in her arms. She wanted Isabelle, the child she knew and loved. Actually Jack saying they could try again would be very hurtful, especially after finding out Caroline was pregnant. Maybe in a few years they will, but it is still too fresh and they are still mourning.

could not agree more, LeiaKat you said everything I was thinking.

Because when a child dies replacing it will not take away your pain.

It's very sad that as a society we think we can replace a person by just making another one. This isn't a cell phone or even a puppy. This was a human being and these people were in mourning. This generation is a joke.

reply

Oh man. Not to be rude but did you really think about this when you posted this? She lost her child. Think about losing someone you love, no matter who they were. You can't just replace them. Just because she was alive for only a short time, doesn't mean that they didn't love her and view her as an individual who cannot be replaced.

plus if i were in her shoes i'd be terrified to have another baby, worrying about possibly losing that one too. it will take her a while to get over this, and i agree with what someone up above said, i think she will have more children but with someone else.

They could. If, as seems implied at the end, they got back together, maybe they did, later. I think Emilia needed to get over her unwarranted but tremendous guilt first.

"You were dead. Now you’re not. That’s completely fυϲking mad."
