Ben's new girl near the end - Middle of Nowhere (2015) Discussion

When Ben and Grace were hanging out at his house and Ben was showing her pictures, that girl's picture was in the photo album. It wasn't really brought up except for a sentence but it was implied that she was an ex-girlfriend of his. I guess him showing up with her at the water park was meant to show that Ben was just a jerk and a coward who just wanted to have sex with Grace.

Exactly. Dorian warned her that Ben was a self absorbed rich kid that didn't care about her; that he couldn't appreciate anything because he was handed everything thanks to mom and dad. She threw away a potential shot with someone that gave a damn with someone that didn't.

It was refreshing really. Usually the jerk second guys is usually a wounded nice guy softie in these movies. This showed the real truth; a jerk is a jerk. And if you go after one and get hurt after being explictly warned, you deserve exactly what you get which is hurt.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that was like hey you get what you get.

The thing that's sad is that she just seemed to loathe Dorian for whatever reason, I mean come one Dorian was quirky,adorable and maddeningly hott all at the same time.

While the other kid was exactly what he said he was. Vapid and spoiled.

Well, he was a criminal too, involved in drug dealing; people like him usually end up in jail or worse.

Grace acts like it's normal

My dear young friend... Grace acts nothing like normal. You could almost see her heart break, she was really in love with Ben.

It's been several months since I saw the movie so I may not have the details correct but... I'm sure her heart was broken but she still didn't really react. I mean it seemed like they were together a couple of days ago and then he shows up with another girl. Would you just stand there? She didn't react at all externally from what I remember. That would have been major drama if it were me.

Most girls don't react by kicking and screaming, even if they think they would.

Grace put on a forced smile, said hi to Ben and Melanie, and then, when they walked away, you could see a look of pain in Grace's eyes. Good acting on the actress's part. That's when the viewer thinks "her heart is broken."

Sim is absolutely right. It would not have been true to her character, or the overall feel of the movie, for her to react more melodramatically. It was portrayed just right. (If one wanted to quibble with anything, it could be whether that guy wouldn't actually try harder to avoid the awkward encounter.)

I think it just showed how cool Grace really was. She def showed pain in her eyes, body language, but to not have a meltdown in front of Ben showed great strength and character.

I might as well enjoy my life and watch the stars play.

The "new chick" is his old girlfriend. What about the kid with them? There's no indication it's his son, but there's no indication it's not his son, either.

I think you're all being overdramatic here. Saying that she had her heart broken and going deeper into every detail.
Grace liked the guy and he liked her, they just flirted and then went out on a date. Later on when Grace's problems had deepened she wanted an escape from all that bad stuff and went to Ben's house. He did not lie to her, he said that the other girl (Melanie) was in the program with him, and it was clear there was something more between them. Grace did not ask more about it and she decided to have sex with him. I wouldn't say Grace was in love with the guy, and they didn't even have a real relationship... Either way I don't think they had a chance to be together. She was a local girl trying to get money for college, and he was just visiting the town, having parties in his parents' house, plus he was an adventorous type, spending time in Africa and etc. We don't know his exact relationship with Melanie, maybe he did not expect her to come to town any time soon, or ever. I wouldn't say he was a jerk. He was nice to Grace and wanted to spend some time with her, she wanted that too.
When they all met at the aquapark, Grace saw Ben was happy with Melanie and realized he's not the guy for her and that they couldn't be together. Ofcourse it was awkward and uncomfortable for her, but I wouldn't say she felt like her heart was broken. One other thing occures to me, Grace's sister said "sometimes I think she doesn't even have feelings". You know, some people are overdramatic and some just aren't. Like you guys and Grace on the other hand. :D

I thought it was weird that he just showed up with her like that when he knew Grace worked there and all. It was like he was showing her off or he wasn't aware of anything being wrong.
