Why are there army guys in high school?

Since I don't live in the U.S., I don't understand how this works. I thought guys would finish high school before enrolling in the military. How would these guys be in school and the military at the same time? Can someone explain to me how this works?

They weren't in high school. They already graduated in the past but were just there to watch in the audience. This is why he mentioned that they were losers in his speech because they continue to hang out at the high school though they are finished.

I havent seen the first 20 min of the movie, so I dont know where those guys came from, but most public High schools also have military training programs called ROTC. They wear military uniforms and mostly they learn how to salute and do push-ups.

It's explained that the most obnoxious of them is Beth Cooper's bf, a loser because he hangs around high school even though he graduated. They're first shown in the beginning at the graduation ceremony in uniform.

The uniforms they wear are Army dress blues and the light blue braided cord around the right shoulder means they're infantry soldiers. They all have ribbons and Combat Infantry Badges, so they're supposed to be combat veterans.

ROTC guys would be wearing green "class A" uniforms with no medals or rank insignia.

Watch the first 20 minutes if you get a chance--the movie opened strong and got weaker as it progressed, for me at least. You missed the best part!

I know the Marine Corps has this program where you can go to boot camp in the summer between 11th and 12th grade, and after you graduate you just go to your first duty station.

reply

Correct. I think it's called the split option. Juniors can go to boot camp during the summer, come back and finish senior year, and then officially join in and get additional training for whatever job they're given.

I disagree.. The vast majority of public high schools do NOT have ROTC.
Additionally, ROTC is not limited to the army. People and ROTC DO wear rank insignia.

Someone needs to differentiate between ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps, which of course is for officer candidates and is entirely college-based since successful candidates must be going for a four-year college degree), and any high school-based programs for those who intend to join the military as enlisted personnel (which programs I am not familiar with).

High school-based officer candidate programs are apparently very rare in the US.

Army Junior ROTC programs in some high schools claim to not have a goal of training their cadets for military service. The claim otherwise is stated on the Army JROTC Web site: "To Motivate Young People to Be Better Citizens"https://www.usarmyjrotc.com/

Also worth mentioning, I think, is the fact that individuals with serious aspirations for a career as an officer seek appointment to one of the military academies, (e.g. West Point, for the Army) because officers who are graduates of one of the military academies almost always get a preference when it comes time for promotion.

What the hell are you talking about? Anyone who reads what you wrote can only come out 1. Annoyed that everything you've written is wrong, or 2. dumber.

I see. Plus, I also believe ROTC guys are nowhere near that muscular and capable of those martial arts moves.

i dont live in the US but my high school was part civilian part military. the only thing that kept the militaristic part was a fence.
so some students were in kinda pre-military program. i think they even came to the class with their army clothes while we were in our school uniform.
