Jenny's mysterious past...

Jenny's past is barely hinted at in the film, unless I missed something. I assumed her home life was rough or she wouldn't have left. There is no blatant answer as to the circumstances which compelled her to leave. I came to IMDb looking for answers but there are few posts here about the plot details. One reviewer did suggest Jenny was a victim of incest but that isn't said in the film, unless I blinked and missed it. Is the viewer meant to use his imagination? And why on earth did she end up living with two couch potatoes? Living in those gritty digs, how does she then attract the attention of a toff and rate an invitation to a prestigious ball? The bits and pieces defy logic...do they make more sense in the Pullman novel?

From what I remember she was indeed a victim of incest, by her father.
