A.D.D is horrible

I have no clue for the life of me how this band even realistically made it big in the movie. The music was generic. The lyrics were bad. There was nothing that really even gave the notion that this would be a band opening for a hall of fame group. They had a horrible look and really had no collective theme. They opened for a metal band. Which I'm sure 90% of the fans there were for Vesucvius or however you spell it,not A.D.D. They would have not been caught dead cheering on stage a Bubblegum teen bop band.

Of course maybe thats the point and its making a statement at how craptastic most mainstream music really is and how MTV fans alike have no musical taste what so ever.

Dito, but I still enjoyed the movie. I just closed my eyes and ears whenever they started playing and imagined a Qotsa gig.

reply

I'm only going to type this once, so read it very carefully.

IT'S A MOVIE.

...although, yeah. MTV has brainwashed all the teens and tweens into all loving the same trash that they deem is the greatest stuff ever. But who cares.

IT'S A MOVIE.

Oh crap, I typed it twice.

Emo rock in the style of Weezer/The Rentals from the 90's was SUPPOSED to take off in the last few years.... but, it didn't. (thanks to Weezer, for the most part, for abandoning their own sound)

I think the producers were right on with the type of music they were trying to sell. I quite liked it, actually.

Also, I think you're missing the point of modern music completely. You can't really say that bands with lame lyrics and a generic sound never make it big. Turn on your radio. It's all around you.

reply

Turn on your radio.

That's your first problem. Typical FM Radio is a cancerous plague on mankind. The generation of KIIS FM kiddos and Miley Cyrus/Jonas Brothers crap is unbelievable, but I take solace in the fact that they'll all die out eventually like the godawful boy band era.

reply

Highly doubt it. The garbage tends to stay around forever. While the greats tend to off themselves before their time.

i think u overanalyzed it they were supposed to be diffrent thant the other bands around for christ sakes people got intrested in them because they saw fish playing naked on youtube.

i also dont think u get the fact that they show 80s hair metal band in the begginging its the 20th century his nephew or whatever is younger and grew up listening to weezer type bands what type of band do u think their gunna be? personally i think their pretty cool what band do u know with an 80 hair metal type drummer a keyboardist whos kind of a nerd a somewhat emo frontman and a like alternative chick..

reply

A.D.D. sounded exactly like every other band of their genre. They were a crappy garage band who would likely make it big in reality because the media accepts garbage and passes on talent. Nothing at all was good about that band.

Heck, the entire band was incredibly phony. The drummer was an idiot who can't let go of the past, despite the fact that he was an eyesore to begin with. He never looked or acted a thing like a rocker of any kind, he acted like some washed up loser who was unpopular in high school and likes to pose. He is the most believable 'poser' of any of the Vesuvius members, and he is the only one who supposedly wasn't a poser. He was just an imbecile.

Curtis was just awful. He was a half-decent actor for his limited experience I suppose, but his singing is horrid and generic, completely uncatchy, and just sounds whiny. The sad part is that is intentional.

Matt? Well, other than the song he opens in... when do you notice him during the songs? He had almost no purpose whatsoever and is CERTAINLY not there for looks. He seems like an unpopular kid they kind of like but mostly feel sorry for so they let him do something that can't hurt them but doesn't really help either so that he can feel important when really he could be removed entirely and not hurt the sound at all.

The only decent one is the girl. She is half buyable as a musician. Not a particularly good one, but somebody you could believe in a band. She at -least- looked the part and somewhat acted like it.

reply

how can a band abandon their own sound? have you heard the new red album by weezer...some of the best "weezer sound" i've ever heard.

"we ain't gonna stand for no weirdness out here."

reply

I agree with much of what was said in this thread but

IT'S A MOVIE.

But that is not all it's being taken as. Go to the reviews page and read the generic comments by viewer after viewer, and you will see that they almost universally love the A.D.D. pop slop rather than simply take this as just another unpolished comedy.

And please do not insult garage bands by suggesting that any one of them ever played pop like these ballads aimed at preteen girls. I will give anyone $100,000 if he can come up with one actual garage band which ever played any song like one of ADD's videos. Where did you learn about garage bands -- Wikipedia? a high school music class? an NBC documentary?

Craptastic mainstream being popular makes more sense then something awesome a creative.

Its a popular style, i cant stand it, but it works for the masses.

reply

You can all stop trying to justify this crap music...Cause well I also listen to EMO music so I am not holding a bias opinion against A.D.D. They can be a Emo band or the singer..Whatever. They still suck pretty bad.

reply

Musical taste is the opinion of the listner ;)

Im not a fan of the stuff, but it didnt ruin my enjoyment of the film at all.

reply

Yeah, the band was horrible but the drums were pretty decent. Did he really play drums in this? I play drums and it sure looked like he was really playing those beats.

Phillies, Eagles, and Sixers fan for life.

reply

it started with the sister putting their rehearsal on youtube, and people liked it, which got them a following and made it possible for them to immediately go on tour(? i guess?). what i dont get is why they would ever open for an 80s hair band.

reply

I just watched the movie and I thought it was pretty bad, period.

It was very generic and the star, Fish or whatever his name was, seemed to be trying to do his best Jack Black impersonation.

But anyway, I saw this thread and thought I'd agree with the op, the music in this was horrible and certainly made the movie worse IMO. If you're going to make a movie about a band, at least have the band have a decent tune or two. Spinal Tap had some great songs, so does Fear of a Black Hat. Even That Thing You Do was listenable. But "I'm Not Bitter"? Who wants to listen to that crap?

And the guy is a "rocker"? What kind of "rocker" would end up with a group of non-drinking, non partying teens, singing whiny emo songs?

Yes, I get that it's just a movie, but it's a bad one. The plot, characters etc were just as generic as the music.

reply

It's a dumbed down comedy with music made just for that band in the movie..... if whoever was composing the songs was talented enough to make music for the Billboard charts then they wouldn't be composing pop music for a movie..... Don't be such a jerk and stop nitpicking movies that were intended to mindlessly entertain. It's about the comedy and relationships developed around the band and not the music itself. Doesn't matter if it's any good or not.

reply

Yeah right. The movie sucked and a big part of that was the music. You are right about it being mindless crap though. And if you're entertained by mindless crap I'm sure you enjoyed the movie.

But Spinal Tap had good music, so did Fear Of a Black Hat, Tenacious D, The Rutles etc. None of those guys are making the Billboard Charts but they made some funny, entertaining songs.

That Emo crap in The Rocker was ridiculous.

reply

Tenacious D never made the Billboard Charts? Spinal Tap is a rockumentary so the music has to be somewhat realistic. Why would they waste money on composing good music for a mindless comedy?

Besides... The music in The Rocker is better than half the crap that's popular today. It would beat out the freaking Jonas brothers any day of the week.... then again that's not saying much. lol.

I'm still not sure why anyone even expected the music to be decent. If you don't like this kind of movie, don't watch it, but nitpicking about how bad the music is in a film when I'm guessing even those who made it would tell you they weren't trying to create any hits, seems like a waste of vehemence.

reply

Tenacious D had a show years before they were making the charts and the music was good.

The music in the Rocker was just horrible. If all you can say is it's better than the Jonas Bros.....well...that says it all right there.

The problem people have with the music is, it's a big part of the movie. And it's awful, it kind of ruins the movie.

And I don't like that type of movie....ya know...bad ones? But I didn't know it was a bad movie until I watched it, did I? Believe me I won't be watching it again.

reply

Lol all of these comments show me how stupid most of the people on this site are. The music was decent if not pretty good. Just because it doesn't sound like what YOU listen to does not make it awful. Granted some music is objectively awful, even if it is catchy and popular, it can still be shallow. This music at least had some feeling behind it, some interesting riffs, and a good sound. Then again, I wonder how many of the people here are actually musicians or have ever performed music for an audience (inb4 everyone says they have six albums or a live stage-show).

reply

A.D.D. sounds like a cliche watered down attempt at 10 year old emo rock like "the get up kids" . The Music, my suspension of disbelief that people would go crazy for them, and the few painful slapstick "comedy" bits ruined this movie.
Dwight was great.
Those who think the music was good have a horrible musical ear.
Can I get a hellz yeah?

reply

Hellz no.

Just because the music isn't your taste, doen't mean its bad.

reply

Those ADD songs were actually really good. There I've said it. Well crafted pop of surprisingly high quality considering they were written just to be part of a movie in a secondary manner.

Just for the record, I'm female...

reply

Have you listened to pop music in the last 30 years? I haven't. Because they sound exactly like ADD and Vesuvius..

Was the music supposed to be good? I don't think so, there were a few jokes aimed at how bad the lyrics were, like "Busted/Trusted, how do you come up with these rhymes?"

So yes I agree that the band was bad but I don't think they were supposed to be great. In fact both bands were your over the top cliché, pastiche even, respectively of 80s HairMetal and 00's EmoOrWhateverYouCallIt.
