The disastrous Raindance screening

I went to see this movie at the Raindance film festival last night - I'm a sucker for things with long takes, like 'Rope', 'Children of Men' etc. - and the screening was a total disaster, as there were no subtitles. I have no problem watching subtitled films - in fact, when the film is in a foreign language, they're pretty damned essential!

First the screening was delayed an hour, and once it finally started people began leaving after about 10 minutes, once they realised the subtitles were never coming. Then one of the organisers came in and apologised and said they were trying to find a subtitled DVD of the film. By this time, half the people had left.

It was a real shame because, as I said, the premise looked really interesting and I really wanted to see it. I feel sorry for the film-makers, because it pretty much ruined the film's chances of winning the audience award.

I'll see it one day when it's out on DVD - that's pretty much guaranteed to have subtitles!

I was there too and I found the whole screening to be quite a let down. First the delay, then the lack of subtitles and then once they started to show it with subtitles, the dvd that the film was playing from started skipping and freezing. It didn't really allow for the viewers to get into the film and runied any tension that the film was building.

It was a shame because it looked like the film would have ben worth watching.

Though I did get a bit bored during the long walk. A bit too long. I understand that they had to go a long way and that takes time but I just found it a bit too long.

how unprofessional is it to walk out of a screening of a film such as this one. there were no subtitles , so what? deal with it. people have put a lot of their time into this. you might now be able to grasp the entire storyline in all its nuances, but surely you would get the main points. you could still make a judgement based on the cinematography, editing, sound, set design, costumes etc.

i was so embarressed for everyone that left. unbelievable.

It sounds like the event planners didn't have their act together, not the movies fault. I don't blame people for walking out if they spent the entire length of the movie waiting for it & watching an unsubbed version.
