Immoral? ****spoilers****
***contains spoilers***
I haven't watched this movie but I know the true story which I read about in the newspaper when it happened. First of all I don't think I'd be able to watch it since sadly this story doesn't end well.
It's one thing to see made up characters die in gruesome ways in SAW and HOSTEL, but to me it's totally different when it's based on a true tragedy.
I have mixed emotions about it but a part of me I think would feel guilty watching it out of respect for the family and victims memory. It would be really hard to rate this movie as "entertainment".
One may argue that, if I think it's uncomfortable watching THIS true story then it would be the same for all movies based on true stories, like schindler's list.
But still watching ww2 or 9/11 movies didn't make me react this way.
I don't know why, but I think I'm not bothered the same with holocaust movies since it's too far back in time, and also there were so many people involved that the story is mostly guesses of what happened more or less.
That 9/11 movie depressed me a lot too, but at least I was able to watch it, I think I could take it because there were so many people that were together. Even if the died they at least were a big group and also people don't know exactly what happened on the planes since everbody died.
THIS however makes me question wether it was really moral to do a movie about it at all. Especially since it's one single woman that is the victim and the poor familiy members that suffer with her.
Part of me is a bit interested in watching it, but another part feels like it's a rape and exploitation of this poor familys fate. If the director really cares about this family he should send part of the profit from this movie to the victims. (although maybe that would feel insulting too for the victims)
This movie feels super-real to me, it feels almost "more than a movie".
