what kind of ultrasound??

What kind of ultrasound shows the fetus before the instrument is even touching the mother's stomach? And what kind of ultrasound keeps the same image the whole time, I mean you know how as the instrument moves around the tummy, the image changes and it isnt as clear as it was. It was like they took an outline and just projected it onto the screen. I mean.. .what the heck?!? thats not even a good "fake" ultrasound
