Can someone nice explain this scene to me, thanks!

I'm Asian, this film was never released in Taiwan, I bought US DVD,
I have to admit my English is poor, can't recognize every word,
sometimes I just can't catch up with the speed of English subtitle,
nevertheless I can figure out 90 percent of the story, except for one scene.

Maria consult with Gypsy fortuneteller tried to retrieve her stolen jewels,
old woman claim for some hair? Maria refused, why?
So the jewels was never found till Tolly's time.
Granny point out one specific painting to Tolly,
was it has anything got to do with Maria's jewels?
What's the importance of " hair " in this scene anyway?
Is there anybody can solve the mystery for me, thanks!

reply

The gypsy told Maria to make a picture of her house. Maria had to use hair to make the picture- the hair from all the people at the fire. Maria said it would be too difficult.

Granny shows the picture to Tolly - the picture that Maria made using the hair. The hair from the thief was used to make the chimney in the picture. It is the same chimney that Tolly asked about the day before.

In the fire, the thief ran upstairs but was never seen again. He hid the jewels in the chimney- the same chimney in the picture. Tolly knew that the jewels must be in that chimney. He knew how to climb into the chimney because Jacob had saved the girl earlier.

I hope this is a good explanation! (Your English is good!)

unobari-1, thank you so much for your reply, though I realize it later,
after 3 or 4 replay, and the keyword is " embroider ".
The prime suspect was missing after the fire so there's no way to get his hair,
that's why it remained an unsolved mystery till Tolly puzzled out.

Just another thought, I don't consider Maria as a bad person, she's learned her lessons.
only if she could cared about Susan a little bit more also treat Jacob as a family member,
it would be so much comfort for the two less blessed kids.

I know I'm late, but the thief's (Caxton) hair was used.
Granny told Tolly that they'd had thought all hope was lost in finishing the embroidery because Caxton had run off, but it turned out that he had given a lock of his hair to a house-maid he was keen on. Back then, if two lovers had to be separated for a long time they would exchange locks of hair to remember each other by. They'd cut off a curl or a small bit of their hair, maybe an inch or two long, then tie the lock with a ribbon to keep it together.

Maria used the hair Craxton had given his house-maid girlfriend/lover for the picture. She used it to make that one little chimney because she had so little of Craxton's hair to work with, and so had to use it on something fairly small.

The clue was that the part of the image embroidered in the thief's hair told you where the thief hid the jewels.
I'm still not sure if Maria knew that Craxton was the thief. If she hadn't known, or if her feelings for him clouded her judgement and left her in denial, Craxton was the thief, she wouldn't have been able to use the picture to find the jewels.

AniMartin, thanks for your reply, very specific explanation.
I was all confused in the first place, I thought the Gypsy woman asked Maria donate a little bit of her hair to locate the missing jewels, it's just a piece of cake, why she wouldn't? Well, use human hair to embroider a picture is another story.

reply

The other point was that the gypsy said if Maria finished the embroidery that the jewels would be found--

It wasn't specifically promised that Maria would be the one to find them, though.

A side note is that the project would have been a huge task and would have given Maria something to do-- something to motivate her and focus her energies on. She would have had to get to know the people in her area and thus would have made friends and fit in better.

Thanks for your fresh point of view, well said, kept Maria busy and time will ease her pain, what if the jewels were never found during her lifetime, her kids supposed to meant much more to her, Wish you know what I mean.
