Strange visual dischordance

The live eye-performances being married to the puppets makes the animation of the inanimate object take on more of a lifelike presence - it tricks the mind into believing the puppet is something truly alive. So why did they counter that effect by giving the puppets sort of hideously inhuman features? It makes them into something alien and uncomfortable to watch. All the work of marrying the human elements to the creepy puppets ends up sliding straight down into the uncanny valley.

I love the effect, and like the film, but I don't understand that decision.

I agree.

The eyes really breathed life into the objects. It was both beautiful and unsettling.

Yes, her eyes are beautiful, and draw you into her as a character. It's too bad the animators did not make her face and body more beautiful, but kind of haggard.
She has this kind of Betty Boop innocence about her, along with her 1920s-era fashions. The film would have been better if it had been longer, say 30 min. instead of 17, and had developed a better, more cohesive story, with a less ambiguous ending. Otherwise the film is very interesting, involving, like a Tim Burton animated film.

I like their decision of using those eyes. To me a lot of acting is in the eyes. You have to show the emotion and I think the film did well with that. It did look creepy, but in a beautiful way. Not sure why they made her body and face look aged. Beautiful visuals as well.
