Much better than the first movie

The first movie was good and all, and I own the first three movies and this remake. But the remake was far better than the first film. When this was in theaters I watched this, followed by the first movie to see how it holds up. The first movie's good, but there are also a ton of problems with it that doesn't make it as great as it once was. Still good, but this is far better.

Both the original and remake are awesome

reply

Both are indeed. But sadly, people attack remakes and act as through the first movies were perfect. In this case it's not. It has many problems. But yes, it is still awesome

I agree marauteatime

I think both are equally good. What I liked about this one was the way it was made felt very much like the Fright Night remake. From the lighting, the way it started with the title kinda being looked over the town, the cast they got was an interesting choice like the Fright night remake and it made me laugh like the Fright Night remake did. I'm kinda shocked it wasn't made by the same director of Fright night remake since like I said it felt very much like it. This was much better than Nightmare on elm Street remake and a few other recent ones I've seen.

All wrong, this movie is terrible and not just because it's a remake. It's just terrible anyway. My reasoning: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1029360/board/thread/259550265

You're funny.

I realize that films are subjective and in most cases you can find people who both like and dislike a particular film, but this is a case where I am literally shocked to find people actually saying its a good film, let alone suggesting that its actually better than Spielberg's masterpiece original. This was EASILY one of the single worst films I have ever seen and I have no problem with remakes, if thier actually done well and respect the source material, which this film most definitely did not do.

Just based on the performances alone, the original absolutely destroys this film in every possible way. I am actually a pretty big fan of Sam Rockwell and even his performance was laughable at best. Its like he knew this was a total garbage film and was just collecting the paycheck, not even putting any effort into trying to make it watchable. Then there is the little boy and more importantly, the little girl that gets taken. Again, just no comparison whatsoever to the performances from the children in the original.

One of the single worst parts was the whole abduction of the girl and the classic TV scene from the original. In this film, they came to accept that thier little girl was in the TV in like 10 seconds. Sam Rockwell doesn't even appear shocked by it. That entire scene is one of the single best aspects of the original and without question one of the single worst aspects of the remake. It was so believable and such an amazing scene in the original and so fake and rushed in the remake. Same with the entire tree/clown/storm sequence.

I could literally spend an entire day writing about how bad this film was, on just about every front, but honestly whats the point. If people truly enjoy this film then my hats off to ya as you have such low standards for quality film that you could literally watch anything and be entertained. Honestly, try watching some paint dry some time. I am betting you guys find it hugely entertaining, lol.

Just an absolutely HORRID film, one of the worst I have ever seen.

I agree. Really bad.

reply

Absolutely. Everything was bad in this, from the lame film score (can’t replace Goldsmith, but come on, man) to the terribly bland cinematography, & so on & on...
Look what they did to my boy...

Not sure if serious.

I thought the acting was horrible compared to original - really bad and phoned in, I didn't feel the parents anguish at their daughter being kidnapped, I didn't feel the familys Initial confusion at the seemingly playful spirits at the start of the movie - I just didn't feel anything because the whole thing was so bland.

reply

The acting was nothing to write home about in the original. The story was great and the effects were amazing but please don't tell me the acting was anything better than average.

reply

The acting was perfect in the original, Jo Beth Williams in particular put in a fantastic performance as a distraught mother - loved Beatrice Straight and Zelda Rubinstein too, yes it was above average acting-wise

reply

What are you talking about? The acting in the original was pretty great.

If people want, I can give my reasonings for why I believe the remake was better.

Here's a small sample:

*A tornado comes to the house out of nowhere while the mom and dad try to rescue their son from a tree. Not only does no one (neighbors) bother checking outside, but my big thing with that scene is...well, the whole scene. Didn't need the tornado and man oh man was the daughter's acting wooden there. It was as if she had no emotions whatsoever. So the tornado is vanishing after doing nothing, the daughter runs outside and goes "Mom, dad, look a tornado." Really? They were outside! I would think it would be obvious that they saw it even though it did nothing.

*This is a big one. The actress that plays Tangina is great, but dang the scene with her and the mother deciding on who saves Carolanne was probably one of the worst scenes written. It made Tangina, a PROFESSIONAL look like a total idiot and heartless.

Tangina: Help me tie this around my waist!

Mrs Freeling: What are you doing?

Tangina: I'm going in after her!

Mrs Freeling: She won't come to you! Let me go!

Tangina: You've never done this before!

Mrs Freeling: Neither have you!

Tangina: You're right. You go.

I mean really? A professional who has delt with spirits before is going to allow the mother to enter the portal? She is seriously going to risk the mother, another family member to get the girl back? Thanks to that, Tangina risked both Carolanne's life as well as Mrs. Freeling. Had things gone wrong, the family would have lost both Carolanne and the mother. As a professional, Tangina should be ready to risk her life for whatever family she chooses to help. That's the dumbest thing I ever heard.

That's like having a child stuck on a rock in the ocean, surrounded by hungry sharks, and the shark expert tells the mother she is willing to sacrifice her life to save the child. When the mother suddenly says she better go instead because she is the mother. The shark experct tells the mother no because she never did this before. The mother shoots back, that neither has the shark expert, and the expert agrees and allows the mother to risk her life when it really should be the expert risking hers.

Those are just two examples. In the remake, no wooden dialogue, the actors actually care that they're acting, the son doesn't bicker stupidly and just goes, and the professional even goes in, in order to do his job. He does his best to not have any of the family members risk their lives.

Again, I can make a list and even explain and compare scenes as well if people want. Again, I don't hate the original, but people are delusional if they think the film is a masterpiece and flawless.

I'm sorry, I got like 2 sentences in, but I just can't read this as I honestly just can't take this opinion seriously, no matter how hard I try. Its so ridiculous that the only logical conclusion I can come too is your just screwing with people. I would rather believe that, even if its not true, than believe there are people out there with such horrid taste in film that they would prefer this ridiculous remake over a classic from one of the best directors of the era.

I can easily prove the remake is better. Can you do the same for the original?

reply

Lol no you can't.

CG gore is the worst thing that has ever happened to the horror genre.

reply

Actually I can. What's laughable is that you can't for the first movie.

reply

This guy is for real?? Wow...

reply

Prove it's better? Assuming you could "prove it", would people who hate it, then have to like it? How ridiculous.

well at least you sure tried super hard. reading TWO whole sentences.
ONE was hard enough, but you went above and beyond the call of duty
and read ANOTHER ONE even!

reply

You read 2 sentences and just decide they are wrong and you are right...

You must be young, like nowhere near 30, since you just don't know or understand the era. I get such a kick out of young people bashing movies made in the 70's & 80's, because they have such ignorance about it....smh
