Would a fantasy fan really enjoy this?

I've heard many good things about this series and was wondering if someone who likes fantasies like Tolkein and Ghibli movies would enjoy this. Also how's characterization?

I like both, Tolkien's fantasies (the books more than the films) and Ghibli movies.

For me the series is as good as my favourite Miyazakis (Nausicaa, Howl's moving castle, Spirited away). The series got my top rating.

The characterisation of the main characters is very well done. Better than in Princess Mononoke. But naturally the series has more time to develop the characters.
